Front License Plate on M6: No / Yes (Options?)

New Jersey, the state where I live, requires both front and rear license plates on all passenger vehicles, except for vehicles registered as 'historic', that are older than 25 years, which are required to only have one license plate mounted on the rear of the vehicle. All of my cars have rear license plates installed only, none on the front of the vehicles.

I have had my 2014 M6 Coupe since June of 2013 and like many of you, decided that drilling holes into the plastic bumper for installing a bracket, along with a my license plate on the front of my vehicle would be a major aesthetic blemish on the sleek front design of the car. I have not installed a front license plate on any of our vehicles since 2007 and have never had any problems about this issue with any Police officers in any state that I have traveled. The idea of the awful look, compounded by having to drill either 2 or 4 holes into the plastic front bumper is not appealing to me at all!

Well, last week I was finally pulled over by an LEO who asked me where my front license plate is? Specifically, it was a Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) Police Officer who was manning a booth at the Manhattan entrance to the Holland Tunnel that leads to NJ. In what I must assume is a very boring post, he must find something to help pass the time and this issue is one that he probably looks for on many nice vehicles.

In any event, he asked to see my paperwork, (Driver's License, Registration and Insurance ID Card), which I provided to him. He asked why I did not have a front license plate. I explained that I was waiting to receive the proper mounting bracket from my BMW Dealer and had the plate in the trunk of the car. I did not share with him that I had not requested that bracket from my Dealer (yet). He came back and said that since I have no infractions and my paperwork was in order that he would give me a warning, but that if he saw me again without a front license plate that he would issue me a ticket.

Then, being the smart-ass that I can be, I asked why was he concerned about this since I was in New York City at this location and my car is registered in NJ. He said that PANYNJ Police enforce the traffic laws of both New York and New Jersey. I admit that he is technically correct regarding the law and that I have been lucky so far as to not have had any prior warnings or tickets about this issue.

Yet it really does bug me that this is an issue at all. There are 17 states in this country that only require a rear license plate on passenger cars. E-ZPass cameras at most toll booths are positioned at both the front and rear of the toll-charging lane to record the license plate information of all vehicles passing through. Why is it really necessary to have two license plates, rear AND front....???

I have read that temporarily putting the front license plate on top of the dashboard facing out of the windshield is not acceptable, since most states that require front license plates on cars, (not trucks), have dimensional requirements that say it cannot be located more than 18 inches or so above the road level, or language along those lines and that the plate must be in the vertical position, perpendicular to the ground.

I know that there are companies that sell license plate brackets that will screw into the front tow bolt socket so one does not have to drill holes into the plastic front bumper, but it still looks most unfortunate....

What are your thoughts and experiences with this?
Have you just bitten the bullet and installed the front plate and try to ignore how bad it looks?
Any other folks here who share my aesthetic preference to go without the front plate, even though it is required in your state?

I recall reading in the 650i F13 posts in the last year, maybe two, where guys had purchased a license plate frame which would retract under the front bumper when not wanted and could be pulled back out to be visible. You might do a search on retractable license tags/frames on the F12 650i forum.
I had the same problem when I lived in TX but fortunately SC understands it is unnecessary to have two plates.
Good luck with your search. I understand completely how it screws up the good looks.

I'm at 1200 miles on a 535i m-sport and I have the same feelings about this as you. I just received my plates last week and I haven't put the front plate on yet...

After reading Sandlappers post I went and searched around for a motorized, retractable front license plate and found:

The dealer installed front plates on my previous M6 without asking me and I hated it to the point of removing and fixing the holes. My current M6 doesn't have it and I love the look. I've paid a fine already but won't install them permanently.

The Hide The Plates will not work with the F12/13. There is not enough stability on the bottom of the bumper due to the oil cooler being there. You can't mount it in the mesh area because it's not deep enough.

EDIT*-The Hide The Plate DOES fit on the F12. We got it installed today and it looks great and works awesome. I will post a video as soon as our remote gets returned to us. The technician forgot to put it in the car and they are mailing it to us.

I say NO to the front plate. I've been running it for almost a year and a half and no tickets. I've driven across several states and have yet to get pulled over by the fuzz.

Take the risk - the cops may even give you a thumbs up at the stop light....

So we just purchased an M6GC, will be doing ED in a few months and this issue has come up. We don't want to drill holes into the front bumper but we're in California and cops can be sticklers at times if bored.

Can't we keep the front licensce plate on the front dash (when needed) and isn't that an acceptable option?

I have the same issue and point of fact, NY laws are so gay that I went a step above and beyond the call of duty... I flew down to Florida, registered myself as a resident via my parents home and now I have 2 cars that are actually in New York both with Florida tags and what I would describe as a license to .... Well, what ever the heck I want. I have the windows on both my 2014 Porsche 911 C4S Cabriolet and on my 2015 BMW M6 BLACKED OUT... Which is a big Kiss My Ass to the police, I also have no NY registration and no front bumper. I would sooner set fire to my cars then I would comply to what these clowns want. I think if it as my G-D given right use my car the way I want, if I want holes in my cars bumper, then I will put them there, if I don't, then I will get around it and you should do the same. These cops think they are the **** these days, I say "F@*** Them"... It's your car, do as you wish, but don't ruin your car for them, that's silly!!

Some PD's have technical assets on the top of their vehicles that automatically read license plates, then loads the time, date, and location data into a database. Building a database of peoples whereabouts.

Perhaps that data is less consistent, or less data is captured, when people don't have their front license plate on? I myself live in WA where it's required, though *gasp* I don't have it on.

I noticed that in Seattle in the daytime, cops have higher priorities. When I am out visiting friends in the suburbs, cops who don't have donuts to eat, domestic disputes to solve, or kids drinking in public to mess with -- they'll pull you over and give you a warning / ticket.

I'm on my first warning, I'm sure if I got pulled over again I'd get a ticket. I really should just get the "thingy-ma-bobber" that attaches to the toe hook in the front bumper right side.

I would agree. Just move to Florida. Weather much better doen here, no ruts or holes in road, no snow... Just the gray heads that can't see above the steering wheel. You need to avoid these!

Since it's a fix-it ticket... you dont even have to pay the fine. Velcro works like a champ to get the sign off then back to plateless....
