radio issues anyone?

I have been brining in my 2004 x5 to the dealership for about a month now because of a red light that comes on the radio when the vehicle is out of range for cell service. the problem with this is that it turns out my SOS system was not functioning for a few weeks and the dealership told me that the red light was normal, when in fact there was a problem. Is anyone else having these same issues with the red light coming on while they are driving? Should I be concerned eventhough the SOS works now but the red light still comes on?
