Mein Auto: 1986 bmw 528e
New guy with first 528e saying hi from Tn.

Just a hello to all , been lurking for a few days after just purchasing an 86' 528e , Auto , Silver ext. with mint black int. , 131,000 miles , everything works but the a/c (blows warm) , This car is loaded with more stuff than all 3 of my other cars together , even has all the original books and sales literature , tool tray and tools , matching unused 5th wheel and years and years of receipts including a complete trans rebuild 8 mos. ago , Never had noticed them before but a friend of a friend said go look at it and the price was right so I figured why not , Very nice cruiser for what it is but a real turd in the go department , I did all the searches for upgrades and found its not worth messing with cost wise , The car is way too clean to swap or mess with the originality to me so I probably wont be keeping it for me and either giving it to my son for his first car or moving it on to someone that can appreciate it , I don't usually join a forum with the intention of selling right from the get go so if you can talk me into keeping it ill listen , Hate to get rid of it as it might be one of those you don't know what you had situations .

The 528e is a very nice car, but was really an economy version, not a performance car. If you are looking for power, you may want to move up to a 535i.

Hey Catso , I know what I purchased but my brain is for some reason still comparing it to my built Supra I just sold (gotta let that go) , Night and day between the two I know but Ive always driven fast cars so settling down into a cruiser has been quite the change for me , Its growing on me though , I guess I can live with the just out for a cruise speed but I will have to at least change up the look a bit , Lower to the earth some , Wheels , Tint and fix the a/c , Then just cruise it , I am new to the BMW world and have seen there is a lot of different models to choose from for sure , but I like the old school look , Im 46 so the 80's work for me as far as old school goes.

BMW makes lots of performance cars, particularly the "M" models. You may want to investigate that a bit.

Mike - As you have acknowledged, the 528e is no burner to put it mildly, but one in that condition and silver over black is quite rare. A decent chip in your ECU (no ebay - Turner maybe) will do relative wonders for the eta.

Share some pics of that mint black interior if you really want to feel the love! Congrats!

I would suggest putting in a 3.46 diff from a 6 cylinder e30 it will help give the car a little more get up and go. You currently have a 2.93. You can always find a euro head but they are a bitch to find. I think it is the 173 casting. You can also do the E to I swap but that is harder to do because yours is an 86 with flat pistons. So unless you do a complete swap you are not going to get a much faster car, but you get a car that is a nice cruiser as been stated earlier.

I did think of just doing a chip and a rear diff. swap and that's it , The car is to clean and orig. in my eyes anyway and it runs great so hate to do a motor swap , Im a truck/hotrod guy so its been a little hard to get used to , Still deciding whether or not to sell it , Its a great car but its just not me.

Man, that is one beautiful car! Those pictures look like a brochure. I'm tempted to make an offer, but if I bring a 3rd home I'd have nowhere to put it, and that may stretch the wife's patience. Plus I'm still trying to bring my 535is back to that quality (with Andy's help actually).

But I agree with you and Andy, economically (resale/return on investment), all you need is a chip and diff - that car will get by on looks.

I think your idea of giving it to your son is the best. He will learn to drive on a great platform without having too much HP to get into trouble.
Also, he can fit friends and it is a very safe car in case of a mishap.
