2008 M5 or M3??

I don't want to start a huge debate, but I'm looking for some pros and cons here. I've had 2 BMW's so far....a 2011 bone stock 328i and a 2008 535xi completely load and a 6-speed manual. I currently have the 535 and love the car. It's white on black and loaded with every option offered. My problem is that as much as I may love a car, I get bored with in a year or two and look for something different. I'm 39 and have owned 39 cars so far. I rode in a friends M6 last summer and was blown away at the performance. So I'm considering selling my E60 outright or trading it in if they don't wanna rape me.

I'm looking at 2 different cars right now. A 2008 M5 (original sticker of 98K) it has everything I want and it's a stick which is a requirement for me. It currently has 62,000 miles and is Metallic Black with the Gray merino leather interior and black carpeting. I'm also looking at a 2008 M3 which is also equally loaded and that only has 40,000 miles and is also black with black interior. The M5 is around $30K and the the M3 is $34K.

I'm looking for what to look out for on either and what usually goes on them. I've had my valve intakes walnut blasted and had to replace the water pump on my 535.

I'm more partial to a big car so I'm leaning towards the M5, but the low miles on the M3 is attracting me too. I don't NEED to get either...just catching the itch so I started looking around the NJ tri-state area and these are pretty close and look to be in perfect shape.

I prefer the M5. There's just something about a family sedan with 500 horsepower. I got mine two weeks ago and am still in love with it

Last chance to get a V10 at reasonable age. If you can afford repairing it I'd say no question.

Your state doesn't have sales tax on car registration?

I'm leaning toward the M5 just because of the look. I'm not big on the E90s styling since I've owned an E60.

I am a huge fan of the M5 myself. It is my favorite M car. But The E90/E92 M3 is legendary. Never heard a bad comment on the car and never saw it lose a comparo test. In this case I would lean towards the M3 because of the mileage mostly. You are going to have to think about some type of warranty costs for either car, and it will be cheaper and easier with the M3.

Normally I would say M5, but in this case I would go M3.

Thanks for all the input everyone. I'm a fan of both, but when I factor in what I want to spend and what I can work on myself and found an AWESOME deal here in the area. I ended up getting an 06 M3. I didn't really want to go to the previous generation, but I like the styling and like I said, I couldn't resist the deal. Thanks again.
