1995 M3 - ABS Light

ABS light comes in when I drive my M3. Took my car to a mechanic today who said it would not be worth the time or money to fix ABS problem. He ran a quick diagnostic to see if it were a simple sensor problem but could not find a simple solution.

I have diagnosed the problem to be either the ABS pump or the ABS control module. At this point how to I figure it out? Should I just replace both?

I am not very mechanically inclined but was going to buy both parts used from ebay and pay a local mechanic $300 bucks to remove old part and install new one.

Any thoughts or advice? has anybody done this before?

Following this thread cause I have an ABS light on, also. I've only had my 95 M3 for about two months and haven't had the time to bring it somewhere to run a check and see what the problem is. I'm really hoping its just a wheel speed sensor. Let us know what you end up doing and how much it cost.

My mechanic told me it is either the electronic / microprocessor or (more likely) the control box. There is no way to know which until you replace one or both, at about $500 each.

I am an old guy who has driven non-ABS cars my whole life and never had a crash so I haven't gotten it fixed-- the M3 has excellent brakes and can probably outbrake almost everything on the road even w the ABS not working.

Also, the last study I heard about showed there has been NO significant decrease in the number of crashes since ABS became common, so scientifically it's a non-issue too apparently.

But then I live in S Calif where it hardly ever rains. If I lived somewhere where the roads are wet a lot I would have it fixed
