E82 / E88 1 Series (2008 - 2013)
BMWs throw back to the iconic 2002, with a renewed form and function. The smallest car in BMW's line up but still packs a punch. Available in coupe or convertible, powered by either an inline 6 in the 128 or the twin turbo rocket sled 135.

Gas, gas, and more gas.

What's the deal with the 128i vert and 15 MPG city? I must be "driving wrong," but short of gliding half the time, how am I going to get any kind of respectable number? All help and advice appreciated.

Well the convertible is nearly 400 pounds heavier than the coupe, stop & go city driving hurts fuel economy, and so does a heavy foot.

A recent test done in a car rag also found the odometer readings in the BMW are suspect.

The best I can do with my 135i in mixed driving is 22 MPG. I try to be light footed on the gas, but power is the ultimate temptation!

Within the last year an issue of C&D or MT where they were checking fuel mileage. Anyway, I didn't buy the rag; it was just laying around my dentist's.

I spend a lot of time in stop and go traffic in Destin, FL where it's 95 degrees and the A/C is wailing, and today I saw 13.3 MPG. I'm beginning to think there's a problem. The other day I took it out on highway and reset the counters and ran for a while 55-65 and got 28.5 MPG for the stint.

We're car shopping for something a lot more reasonable.

I get mid to upper 20s in my e88. The car computer says 27 point something. I think my calculations show about 1 mpg less. I don't do anything really special. I drive about 5 over but I don't accelerate hard often. usually I am upshifting before 3K rpm. My main drive to work has 6 or 7 miles in stoplights followed by about the same on the highway around 65 mph followed by another 7 miles or so with only one light. I'm sure it would be less if it was all lights. I don't get much different mileage on trips - but I am driving faster.

Color me dense. Never occurred to me to do an old school calculation based on tank size, mileage, etc. Too starry-eyed about the info onscreen. Will try next. I'd be a lot happier if I thought I was getting 20-something mpg. It's not the cost it's the thought of 13 or 15 mpg, when 50 is avail with hybrids.

I also should mention I have the DCT which uses more fuel than a manual. I figure the best MPGs I'll ever get out of this car is 20.

I traded in my BMW 323i for a Honda Civic Hybrid back in 2006. I was going after mpg but after the new car thing faded... I really, really missed driving something that could get out of its own way. Well, my kid just turned 16 and the civic is now his. I could not get my butt back into a BMW fast enough!

I just purchased a '13 128i and I drive with a smile everyday... I love it. I'm getting about 16ish mpg's (driving up and down the hills where I live) and I do not miss that hybrid 1 bit.

I average about 20 mpg everytime I calculate the mpg during refueling. My computer always shows 1 mpg higher than my actual calculation. I do mixed city/highway driving with the occasional WOT.
