Next Gen X1 Spied

The next gen X1 was spied out testing recently. This new X1 will differ from the current X1 by making the switch from rear drive to....front wheel drive. The next gen X1 has been built on BMW's front drive "UKL" platform, and when released in early 2016, should be offered in both FWD and AWD models. The UKL platform will also be utilized in the next 1 Series and is already being used in the new MINIs.

Check out some spy pics of the front drive X1 on the road, but still in camo.

IMO, the essence of BMW is performance and the ultimate driving machine. If I'm currently thinking to buy a BMW based on that reputation and expectation, I probably will by pass a FWD based one and just pay a few thousands more for a 320i. If I can't spare the extra cost and wanted a FWD based car, I would buy a Mini and save some money.

But like the saying goes, never say never. So, only time will tell when the new version is introduced and I'm able to test it out. There's always a chance I might like it, but I think the probability is low.

I saw the new X-1 mule riding around Munich near the Welt. I was not impressed. I like the proportions of the 2015 X-1 much better. Also, it is questionable if there will be an engine with the hp of the 3.5 with the new car. I heard that BMW has a 3 and 4 cylinder powerplant for the FWD X-1.

I will wait until the car is actually mass produced, the price is established, reviews are written, reliability and performance stats are published and then buy the car if my wife says it's ok.

It will still be a BMW and I am sure they will do everything to preserve that unique feel, FWD or not. I am not a fan of FWD but the Mini handles very well and is a FWD vehicle of course.

The problem is that most people think that the current X1 does not have enough space and the bonnet/hood is too long for the body etc. Me, I like the current model and think that it is one best of the current crop of BMWs and it feels and drives like the BMWs of yore. However FWD will allow them to increase passenger room without increasing the size of the car.

I will wait for it to be available to drive at my local BMW dealer before I decide whether they have screwed it up.

If it comes with a manual transmission and AWD, then it'll be a great car for me. The current X1 is fine, but it's an automatic. Meh. If the new one is automatic only, then I'll get a VW GTI instead.

This is exactly right. As cities get increasingly crowded just making the car longer is not an option. FWD packaging gives you a lot more usable room in the same overall package. Just compare a BMW 135 to a VW GTI. They're roughly the same size, but the VW seats four comfortably.

I'm not entirely against FWD. My wife drives a Mini Countryman which handles great but it doesn't handle like a BMW! I like the geometry of the X1 and the RWD setup is exactly why I bought it. I would have to drive it to make some decisions but if I did stick with the X1, no doubt I would go with xDrive. If not, there's always the X3 or the 328i touring!

Cost to produce FWD is lots less

Weight less too

Fuel economy is better

so BMW is making right decision

aftreall BMW is a business

and Business need to make more money & less cost
