Fuel Pump Removal

2001 525i

Look at the 2 photos. The assembly came out according to the best links (first photo), however the pump separated for some unknown reason and remains in the tank (second photo)! The PUMP will not release from the tank and I do not want to force it and damage it. It acts as if it's attached to something else in the tank. Does anybody know how to get the pump out of the tank? What am I missing? Desperate and stuck on the side of the road.

Two large plastic clamps hold the fuel pump down.

I have put my hand down in the tank to find these clips that you are talking about. I've squeezed every possible thing from every possible angle, while pulling up ward but NO GO. It will not release. Can you suggest what I'm suppose to be looking for. My tank is almost 3/4 full so the pump is submerged and I can't really see where these clips are supposed to be located. I was shocked when the flout came out and the pump was still in the tank. I thought it was all suppose to come out as ONE UNIT. Unfortunately I can't even get the float back in to reseal it for towing, I got to get this pump out, I just don't want to break anything, with 3/4 tank of gas it's going to be HEAVY.

I have never messed with mine, although it should be in my future since I habitually run the gas tank empty ... so all I can do is refer you to what pops up when I type /fuel pump f3 in the bestlinks:

What clips are you talking about? I've squeezed everything inside that pump cavity and nothing is giving. I appreciate the pics and I believe the two clips you are referring to are BLACK and I think I've found them but when I squeeze them the pump moves around but will not release!

I've put arrows on the clips. Clips are 180 deg apart. Push clips toward one another until they contact the pump. Lift out pump.

I squeezed right where you are talking about, I've squeezed them from the top, I've followed those black tabs all the way down to the bottom and squeezed them there, that pump refuses to release. Should I just PULL it with all I got and hope for the best? That certainly doesn't seem the right way to go.

Are you sure this aforementioned thread doesn't have a picture of what you need (even though the model is a different E39)?

Thank you Bluebee

That first picture is what it should look like once the entire assembly is out of the tank. My problem is the "Pump Assembly" section is still IN the tank even though the Float Assembly is already out. I think the first pic, showing the whole unit removed really helps. Because those two black clips that appear on the pump housing unit should be squeezed together to release the Pump ASSEMBLE from inside the tank. I've squeezed both those clips but the pump assembly refuses to release! The PUMP is in the ASSEMBLY and the ASSEMBLY must come out as a unit to R&R the actually pump, if I understand the removal process correctly.
