97 528i rough idle/stumble and so far I've tried...

97 528i with 235k, but just had motor swapped from 2000 328i with 69k. The car starts and runs great, but I started noticing a stumble occasionally while sitting at red lights. Taking off from red lights started become an issue too. The car would stumble really bad until I got up to 3k rpm's or so then it seemed smooth again until the next stop. So far I've tried the following ;
Changed plugs, cleaned ICV, changed CCV, cleaned throttle body, changed FPR vacuum hose, changed crank position sensor, changed vanos solenoid.
The symptoms are worse now than before. I'm thinking FPR or fuel filter ?? Does this sound like it could possibly be slightly off timing ?? Maybe a vacuum leak......"sigh"..... HELP ! I want my smooth running baby back.

the 2000 model 2.8 has a DISA valve which can cause those issues.
also, the 2000 has a double vanos which the 97 doesnt have.
did you check those items?

I got to thinking and know I didn't see a disa valve...checked the book of paperwork from Indy and the motor was from a 98 and transmission they tried to sell me was off a 2000. So single vanos, no disa and no codes. Just an annoying stumble.

fuel pressure is the next thing to check.
I would double check the engine and make sure there is no DISA and also find the VIN of the donor car to validate the year.

To fit a double vanos engine in a sinle vanos car is a nightmare. You didnt chande the ecu so the engine you put in is a single vanos. Did you check the fuel pressure and the injectors for cloging.

Its a single vanos and no disa....I got these codes today after letting it run for 10 minutes p1250 and p301. Seems to be a fuel pressure and misfire on cylender 1 . I ordered a fuel pressure regulator and a fuel filter yesterday so maybe that'll get it. I also have a couple extra coil packs laying around so I'm gonna try replacing cylender 1 coil.

OK, I replaced cylinder 1 coil pack and everything seems to be fine now. I'm unable to really drive it due to a bad rear wheel bearing (that comes in the mail today so wish me luck on that diy this evening), but I let it idle for 10-15 minutes and ran through all the gears. So maybe that's all it was. Good thing I snagged those coil packs at the salvage yard last time huh ? Thanks everyone for hanging in there !!!
