Dionte's 535i/5 Restoration/Build Thread

Wish I would've thought of this sooner.

Anyways, this is my 1992 BMW 535i 5-speed that I will be trying my best to bring back to life. With a few upgrades.

I will try to be as accurate as possible with dates.

Mother basically gave it to me at age 15 when she bought her an e39.

June-2012:
First thing I got done to the car while i had my permit, so I wasn't yet driving. The rear door panels, I can't find and old picture of them before I replaced them. Got them for $20 each at a junkyard.

February-2013:
Water pump was leaking so I got that replaced.

April-2013:
Went to the junkyard again and got a fuel door spring and a new dome light. Also received a custom tag for my 16th birthday.

16th birthday present

June-2013
Had just received my license and began hanging out at he shop. Got some new spark plugs and serpentine belts.

Replaced some vacuum lines

July-2013
Replaced some fuel lines

August or September-2013

Replaced the Oxygen Sensor (Same picture as previous, the white cable)

October-2013
Got the tail lights tinted. I kinda like the old look now that I'm looking at pictures lol.

December-2013
Changed the oil at around 210,000 miles.

March-2014
Changed the OEM fuel filter at 212,000 miles

Also got the hood repainted

May-2014
Installed my Euro Hella Smileys

That's all for now, more to come in the future!

June-2014 Changed the water pump. Did a little bit of degreasing while I was down there.

Tinted the corners and switched out the city light bulbs so the "Parking Light" sign would come off.
Now I'm having an electrical issue with the trail lights.

Have you switched back to see what it does?
I wonder if your LKM has gone bad, others can help on that, and i do have a spare.

Could you please tell me what a LKM is?
Also, I switched some bulbs around to see what worked and what didn't. I almost had it at one point, but everything went haywire.
Dash light won't even come on anymore, neither do the right tail lights now.
Guess I won't be driving at night until I figure this out

Light Control Module, also check the wiring along the trunk hinge, some may be grounding out causing issues.

June-2014 Late, but I actually removed the completely black tail light tint in favor of a lighter shade to match my front turn signal indicators.
I'm actually loving this clean look on it.

August-2014

Finally got her back! Been sitting mostly all of the summer. Car drives 10x better and smoother since the last clutch job was a disaster. Car is quicker than it was before and now drives and shifts how it's supposed to.

New: Clutch, slave cylinder, release bearing

Repaired: Fuse #5 & #6 were replaced as well as the turn signal indicator bulbs. All lights now function correctly as well as the city lights. Only lights that still don't work are the reverse lights, it really doesn't bother me much, but I think that it may be a bad grounding since the fuse and the bulbs look fine.

I really like how your keeping the car original. Just want to give you a few mechanic tips. With how many miles on your car Id highly recommend using thicker oil in your engine, like Castrol GTX 20-50w. You can get a 5quart jug at Wally-world for 15bucks. Itll keep your straight 6 running smooth for a long, long time. Also if you havnt changed the gear oil in your tranny it'd be a good time to change that stuff out. If money is not an issue for you, I'd put in Royal Purple Synchromax. Now if your cheap like I am then just use 90w gear oil. However Royal Purple will give you slightly better results for a few bucks more, it wouldn't hurt to save up your pennies for it. Keep sending Pics, your car is turning out real nice Bro!!

After months of procrastination, I finally gave the M30 a valve adjustment. Sitting on 215,000 miles, I believe that this is the first one that she has ever recieved.

Also one of the banjo bolts came up missing which I ended up finding in the corner of the head lol.

Definitely runs much smoother and its also slightly less noisy.

Nice build you have there. I wish I could find interior door skins that were in good shape. There is not to much e34 cars for parts around here I have to drive an hour for the nearest one with any decent parts.

Thanks. I have the dove gray interior and its difficult finding interior parts for this color at junk yards.

So how did that bumper turn out? I saw the right v left side, but not the overall look, or missed that. Hopefully it looks better for you, will save some $$ to not have to repaint it.

Thanks SatinDoll.

And Zombie, I followed the video, even used rubbing compound and about 2 layers of wax.
After it rained, went back to white.

Put the clear lamin-x or whatever brand you use, on the lows, it will help prevent pitting and cracking. I would hate to see your shiny new smileys with a crack in them.

Extremely satisfied with removing the window tint.
Also got a new air filter, pulls more smoothly now and I hope that my Gas mileage will increase slightly.
