Chassis malfunction message

Hi everyone. I'm a new member, deciding to join, today, to find out if anyone else has had this problem.

I have a 2012 7.60li, that is actually more or less brand new. I got it from a friend, who bought it new, but didn't use it for about a year. It came with mileage of less than 100 km, and has done about 1,000 km since I got it, in November 2013.

On several occasions the chassis malfunction warning has come on. I have had it taken to the local BMW dealer (I'm in Nigeria and there's only one here), but they have fobbed me off with excuses like their diagnostic equipment was not working etc. it happened again this morning, and I'm trying to get a handle on this, as the car's essentially brand new, and the message has been appearing intermittently, almost ever since I got it.

The handling does not appear to have been affected, but the car has never been pushed, so it's difficult to know whether it actually has been. Most of the time, it's driven by my driver who, like most Nigerian drivers, doesn't understand high tech cars like this and tend to ignore these warning messages.

I have seen postings dating back to 2012 from a couple of people with similar problems, and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts?

I have to say that I have serious reservations about the local dealership and it's business ethics, and fear that this may be a major, and expensive, problem and they'll continue to fob me off until the warranty period has elapsed and slap me with a heavy bill to fix the problem. They've done something similar to a friend in the past!

Welcome to Bimmerfest! I've moved your question to the F01 7 series forum, you'll get more help in here. Make the dealer fix it, you have a warranty for just this reason.

Tim

Thanks Tim. I'd probably have to use the dealer to make it fix the problem! They have form in that regard.

Babjide, Naija boy here too. I have a 13 750li. Do you have any scanning tools yourself to see if there are more error codes?

There are no other error messages. I did a check on the system in the car, and it indicated that everything was OK, which is why this is so frustrating.

I meant actual error codes that are in the DSC module, not through the car.

Maybe this is inappropriate but do you mind if I ask how much you paid? Im curious what kind of mark up they have in Nigeria. Also why do you spell it 7.60Li ? Just curious,

Hey, on a really off topic question: Whats the general feeling of the whole Ebola epidemic in Lagos. Is the media over hyping it? Or it really starting to get attention from locals?
Thanks

Got the car from a friend, and cost not indicative of local market.

Ebola has attention of everyone here, as it's first time it's been encountered. Lagos has a huge population, and the potential for it to spread has to be a cause for concern.

Hey Bjide! Welcome to the forum.

Based on my experience it is not a big problem at all. It is most likely to be the power steering oil. I had this same error showing on my 2010 750i. Check throughout underneath the car and look for leaks, it could be a defective power steering pump. Though, I advise you to take the car to a BMW dealership or a specialist you can trust. If you keep driving the car and notice that when you steer it makes a groaning sound then it is the power steering oil for sure!

Good luck!

Bjide,

With last seven digits of your VIN you can find out what kind of suspension and steering you have in your 760.BMW VIN decoder You might have electric power steering, even four wheel steering. You might have Dynamic Suspension. Without a little more detail it's hard to guess. Also BIMORI was right about getting a scan tool and finding out what (if any) error codes are stored in the computer will also help. Here in the US most repair shops will scan for codes for little or no money just to get the repair business.

Good luck

jeff

Thanks for this. There are no leaks. There's only one BMW dealership in Nigeria, and I don't even trust them! There are a number of places that work on cars like mine, so maybe I'll end up taking it there if I get no joy from the local dealer.

Thanks Jeff. Dynamic Drive is about all I've managed to decipher. There's nothing about the suspension. I may take it to one of the places that work on BMWs to see whether they can help out if the local dealer continues not to offer a solution. I'm still waiting to find out if their diagnostic equipment is now working.

I know a service advisor in the states, and when I was looking to buy a used 2013 750i, he pulled up the record and found that the less than 7K miles car had the chassis management module, the camera module (controls the surround cameras), and the O2 sensor module replaced. The chassis management module is about $500 parts alone and controls the dynamic drive if you have it, or the driver assistant features if you do not have dynamic drive.

I highly recommend bugging your only one BMW dealer to diagnose and fix the problem.. My SA said he has seen this issue with other 7 series with dynamic drive (I was told and discovered that there are few with dynamic drive unless special order); ARS (dynamic drive) are typically equipped on the Li in 2013 and 2014 buy in very limited number. I am not sure about the 2012.

This might be unrelated but worth checking out your battery voltage and its current state. I know that when my battery was getting old (5+ yrs), my dynamic drive message in my 05 545i occasionally errors. After replacing the battery, the issue when away. Good luck.

Thanks. I'm bugging the dealer to get itself organised and will speak to a couple of independent shops to see if they can help if the dealer wastes too much more time.

Got the dealer to check it out and it seems the battery voltage was the problem. I hardly use the car, and I was told that whenever the charge falls below 60% it gives out the error. I've been using it more these past few weeks, and since I first posted here it hasn't happened again. It's still only done about 3,300 kms. Thanks for the insight.
