Need help: Planning to buy M3

Hello All, Currently i own a 2012 Mustang V6 which im planning to sell and get M3. My budget is around 35-38k which puts me at about 2008-2009 model M3. Would you guys suggest to buy M3 this old? Does it have a lot of maintenance? Also How much should i pay for a used M3 within these model years, roughly?

What should i expect and look for while buying the car? Are there major differences between 2008 - 2011 M3?

Lastly, do you guys think it is wise to sell a 2012 car and go for a 2008 model? I m really confused and looking for unbiased opinions.

Thank you in advance.

Stick with an '09+ simply because of the updated iDrive/COMBOX. If you can find a well kept '09+, I'd jump on it. What area do you reside in? I'd check a few For Sale sections on the various BMW forums as well as Auto Trader/Lease Trader. I don't see anything wrong with going from a '12 Mustang to a recent model M3. There's a lot of tech in the E9X cars.

I agree on the '09+ but if you want the combox, that became available with Sept '10 production. Or you can have it retrofitted but it is a bit pricey...

Im pretty new to these cars so i have to google for COMBOX. Well i drove one 2008 model and it felt old. The engine had some kind noise when i started it. It felt like the exhaust was leaking but after a minute or two it was normal. The BMW guy said this is how the engine functions but i found it weird. Also The steering felt heavy maybe because mustang has an electronic motor for steering and m3 is hydraulic? Im going to drive another one today. Its 2008 model again but 17500 miles on it. Asking price is 42700$
