'04 BMW X3 AUX wire

Hey everyone, I read something about being able to put a aux input on my 2004 BMW 2.5i X3 and just wanted to see if anyone had any idea if that was possible or where i could find the wire.

The blog i read said something about connecting a wire through the back of the radio but was not sure if that was possible on my model because when i press "mode" there is only option for the CD or the radio no "AUX" display.

Thanks guys

Jay

The display shows AUX once the $40 cable has been installed. Following the instructions is important, but it's quite simple.

Will work fine in your 2004 as long as no previous owner has messed around with the radio.

I also have a '04 X3 and was looking to do this... Found these directions, checked my software, but it wasn't high enough according to this info... Am I missing something? Can I confirm any other way, given the vehicle was built in 7/2004?

Maybe these instructions are only relevant for e46 business radios?

Head units built date later than 09/02 or with software version 43 or higher can do aux input. The MODE button is not a good enough of an indicator to check if a radio is AUX or Sirius compatible. To check the software version:
1. Turn Radio Off.
2. Turn Radio On.
3. Press and hold the "m" button for about 10 seconds.
4. Press < or > to navigate, you will need to go to the 2nd screen to look for the SW Verison which is in a SV xx-xx xx format.
5. To be Sirius/AUX or XM compatible, the radio must be SW 43 or higher.
6. Turn radio off to exit.

Thanks!

I just installed an aux cable in my '05 2.5. Really easy and straight-forward. AUX does show after you install. I didn't want my AUX port in the glove box, so I drilled a hole below the climate control faceplate.

Should be able to install on '04s. My instructions state "All X3's"

I put the BMW kit in my '04 and it cuts out after about an hour of play, (using an iPod). I am assuming a heat issue in the radio itself, it only cuts out using the AUX. When I have time this spring I intend to re-do the install. The Business radio sure is a piece! I wish I were not a stock freak but I cannot imagine an after market radio looking anything but horrific in the dash.

Can't help you with the cutting off problem, but I totally agree about aftermarket radios looking bad in the dash. I was looking through Crutchfield, thinking about installing one and came across the adapter:

NOPE! I'll stick with the Business radio.

sorry, but i'm a bit confused. what exactly does this install? is it a 3mm headphone "female" receptacle mounted into the side of the glovebox? or does it leave a length of "male" cable dangling in the glovebox to which you'd plug in the device? if it leaves some "male" cable, is it only 3mm or can it be an apple/ipod/iphone connector? i want to be able to charge my iphone while playing it...i don't mind controlling the music from the iphone so i don't really care much about integrating the menu/controls into the screen on the dash. if it does, that's nice, but not necessary.

i've already researched this subject and this is what i came up with prior to finding this thread (see link below). i'm not sure the difference between what you guys are talking about above vs this below except that this specifically says "ipod" at the top and the picture clearly shows an apple connector in the pic.
http://www.bmw-planet.com/lib/Gen2%2...%20&%20E86.pdf

lastly, i don't have a CD changer, and i don't think i have DSP. does it matter for either of these installations? thanks!

Yes.

You may mount it elsewhere if you like but yes that is all it is. Seems like there was something about a resistor; I bought the BMW kit.

Just did the install last weekend. Easy, and I chose the ashtray in front console.

As already mentioned by fhopper and sixspeedz, the basic $35 BMW aux-in kit is just a proprietary cable that plugs into the radio to update it to aux capability.
(Really neat installation sixspeedz - without using that metal plate that comes with the kit.)

You supply your own 3.5 mm connecting cable for your music player.

This low cost route does not provide charging capability.

There is a more expensive BMW option, and aftermarket ones, that do provide charging and additional audio program control, but not everyone is overly impressed with them.

I'm confused as to why simultaneous play back and charging is required by many people.

Isn't the point of these rechargeable devices that you charge them as needed when not in use?

It's not as though using the MP3 capability depletes the battery in a hurry.

What's wrong with a separate USB adapter for one of the 12V cigarette lighter sockets?

Eliminates the possibility of interference of the audio signal from the power supply which has always been a factor in automobiles.

Thanks! I DID use the plate, but flipped it over, painted it black, and crazy glued it to the tray.

Then I ordered a $5 cable that brings power and audio from both jacks in my ashtray to a single iPhone connector.

To address to cables on my gear shifter, I ordered a $3 clip to hold the phone up on the heater vent... Should work just fine.

would you mind sending a pic of the finished product with all the cables, mount, and iphone together? has anyone seen the proprietary apple connector installed thru the ashtray like that? that's a good spot for it

as for why we want charging capability: the X3 is our 3rd car and the one we use for road trips, so the iphone will be plugged into it for hours and therefore get depleted relatively quickly, esp when using navigation and other apps.

I was wondering what directions you used to place the aux connection in the ash tray? That's where I'd like to put it and also if it was successful and worked properly??

The dealer put this in the glove compartment a couple of years ago. Never really worked as advertised. As I'm listening to iphone 5 music or gps it all of a sudden the switches to radio. Doesn't seem to happen with bumps loudness , I even changed cable

Apparently you can't use Bluetooth for music???
Thanks
