Broken nav/ back up cam 2015 X3. 49 miles!

Wife just got 2015 X3 s28- took 34 miles to get it home-
Nav/ back up cam started going blank at 49 miles- dealer
says I drive controller defective- What German brainiac
Engineer designed safety of back up camera that is funneled
through the 29 modules of the I drive ? Seems that reverse
should trigger display of camera to screen as a default for
Safety! Weeks to get the part from Germany through customs!
Can't get one overnighted from s. Carolina? Anyone have a phone
# for a higher up (fireman) at BMW- I'm not going to be BS'ed-
Thank in advance

Broken nav/ backup camera

If the vehicle only needed R to work the camera it would work/
It does not work apparently with a screwed up I drive controller/
A "fireman" in this case would be a high up person a BMW
with the ability to correct this fiasco(you would think they
would be embarrassed!)

If your I drive is malfunctioning, of course it wouldn't work.

Do you really think BMW would assign a top level manager for every fail component?

I understand your frustration, its a brand new car, but all manufacturers have component failures, brand new or not. Whenever you buy a foreign car, expect some delay in getting parts, that's just the nature of the beast, BMW cannot stock everything in every country, its just not economically feasible.

The back up camera should work independent of the I drive /
That a engineering mistake- there will be lawsuits - vehicle
is not thought out to well. No way to reach anyone at BMW?
Apparently they don't care if they will not reach out to the
Customer.

LOL, lawsuits? its a bit early in the morning for you to be drinking isn't it?

The back up cam is on the I-drive screen and part of the I-drive software. Most factory back up cameras are integrated into the computer these days.
On the contrary, German vehicles are some of the most thought out vehicles in the world, some might even say they are over engineer. Like all vehicles, when everything is working fine, everything is seamless. It is when something go wrong, then we realized how complicated these modern vehicles really are.

@ dkay11

I really don't think you truly understand what you purchased. I have included and older version of the system dynamics explanation for you to peruse. Try page 48-53.

dkay11, clearly you're frustrated that your new car is in the shop. Your reaction to the way the backup camera is designed is excessive, so I can only conclude you have backed over something important as a result of it being offline. Once somebody in my household backed up over my lawnmower even with a backup camera. I've had 3 BMW's with backup cameras and iDrive and I have never had a problem, it seems you have had a bit of bad luck. Try to look on the bright side: The component failed right away under warranty and is being replaced by BMW. The reality is, with German cars, most of the components are manufactured in Germany. With just-in-time logistics, the factory isn't going to stock one extra component than they are required to for manufacturing. Post manufacture/warranty support is likely its own division within the corporate structure and has it's own supply chain and parts management process. A part that is unlikely to fail, such as an iDrive controller circuit, is unlikely to be stocked locally. It's not something that BMW would want to keep in inventory. Hence they have to get it from Germany and like everything shipped internationally, shipping and customs is going to impact how quickly the part can physically get to your dealer. This is the reality of owning a German car. My wife was rear ended in her 335i coupe and it spent three months in the shop getting repaired, a lot of that time was waiting for parts. I'm certain your dealer has you in an acceptable service loaner, so enjoy putting miles on somebody else's car and once your iDrive is repaired, you'll get many years of trouble free service out of your backup camera.

Broken BMW

I want to thank you for your posts- I 64 - I am not drinking/
This is on BMW- if you will pay 49k for a vehicle that gives you
49 miles of service before it breaks then you can accept it/
I don't have to- I have purchased many new vehicles and have
Had this sort of problem in the past- this is not the dealers
Fault and it should not be passed to them to handle- BMW
Looks small in my eyes if they do business in this manner-
BMW customer service( they don't have any) refused to give
me contact info of Andy Riper ( for so CA) He is the dealer
REP- the customer relations people raised there voice at me
when I requested it. Looked like people on the forum accept
Anything they are told by BMW- I do not have to

I own two BMW sav's one of which is a 2015 35i M sport. I don't know what is going on with initial quality as I had issues with my 2015. I have also owned several Japanese cars and trucks and never had these issues. If I ever buy another BMW it will only be a certified one. That way all the initial quality issues would of been addressed already.

OP, is this your first BMW?
Although any new car can have its share of problems...from new...
BMWs just might happen to be a tad bit more temperamental.
Hopefully they will get it fixed for you quickly
Good luck

If you read my original post- I posted looking for someone
On this forum that had a contact number of someone beyond
the toll free # / calling the toll free # I had the agent raise his
voice at me when I requested the dealer rep's phone contact/
He told me he did not know who I was talking about ! ( a lie)
If you guys are going to drive these cars you better learn how
to deal with the corp. if you are wronged- otherwise your making
thing worse for yourselves- bmw has a responsibility to its
customers- don't overlook it- I do question they're engineering -
They're back- up camera should work irregardless of the I drive

agreed

The OP is furious, but I'm sort of with him on this.

I've had several issues with the NAV system as well on the '15. Within the first few days it would fail to recognize that the key fob was in the car and would give me an orange screen with "NO SIGNAL" until the car was restarted. Now, at 6600 miles, the system just fails to start and will suddenly boot up about 20 minutes into the trip. In that time period I get no NAV, no Bluetooth, no backup camera, and no radio, so it's something of a problem. (Try backing this thing up without the camera through that ridiculously tiny window!)

I had a VW before this. Never had any issues like this, and the one time I had a transmission problem they took the car within a day and gave me a loaner. I have to wait a week to even bring the car in this time, and my dealer is huge, so it suggests to me the repair department stays pretty busy. I had planned on keeping this car for the long term, but if this is happening at <10,000 miles what else is on the horizon?

dkay, I do not work for BMW. You are posting in a forum meant for people who are BMW fanatics, so you must understand how your unreasonable anger makes us think you might work for Mercedes or Audi. I assure you, their backup cameras are routed through their MMI and COMMAND systems and have the same failure point. So please be reasonable, you have 8 posts now, so unless you come through with a constructive attitude, as of now you are just some random troll to us. If your corvette stopped working, do you think GM would let you talk to a regional VP just so you could complain? Enjoy your future ignition and airbag and seat-belt and 42 other re-callable problems with your vette's and quit your whining. I'm done with this thread.

I also agree that BMWs are usually over-engineered --- in a good sense --- which provide maximum protection and safety. BMW cars have much more components, parts... Jap cars have less issues simply because they use less components and parts. However, I experienced myself with my old X5 that during a collision, my car has nothing but another jap car has almost half torn down... So German car is expensive but fun to drive. Japanese cars are cheap, easy to maintain, but also "cheap" from its look. US cars, however, are always a good trade-off. And of course, you get parts ready quickly when the domestic car goes wrong...

so it is kind of tolerable that a sophisticated machine has a few more problems than a cheap car made of plastics...

The bright side of your case is that you car is under warranty and BMW should take good care of it. And of course, in the worst scenario you will be protected by lemon law.
