Bmw x3 key issue

I have a 2004 bmw x3. When i bought it the key didnt work. I did all the initialization tests, they didnt work. I even bought a new key, and ran the initializations again, still nothing. What could be the problem? Help?

You bought the car without ever starting it? Does it turn over and just not start? Need more info....

I think it is just the remote central locking that's not working.

Seem to have been a heck of a lot of these stories lately - "bought an X3 with just one key ....".

Can't really diagnose it over the 'net. No telling what previous owner(s) did under the dashboard or wherever the receiver is.
