What is it that you're actually buying? If you're basically buying a software license, does it matter what car is making use of the license? I ask, because I'm not thrilled about the pospect of dropping $3k for the couple of years remaining on my existing lease, but if I could transfer the software to my next car (assuming I get another BMW TT V8 and that I'd just pay for installation), it would make it a much more palatable proposition.
I think for you one of the removable chips, or replacement ECU would make more sense. This way you just swap back the ECU or take out the chip when you are done. I think the Hartge mod uses a physical ECU replacement.

Quick bump - trying to learn a little more about Dinan. Looks like there isn't an option for the 535d? Also, read this on the site:

Special Note: The DINANTRONICS Performance Tuner currently only works with vehicles equipped with mechanical wastegates with a production end date of 6/2013. Vehicles with a production of 7/2013 and newer will have an electronic wastegate and will not yet work with the DINANTRONICS Performance Tuner.

We are in testing on electronic wastegate equipped vehicles so a solution will be forthcoming.

I'm guessing 2015 is in development at this time?

For 2k it doesn't look like a bad investment. Might be a theoretic solution to get more power out of the 535
