The 2000 model and the 1998 are both the same M62 engine.

Incorrect. The 99 and up have the vanos M62TU. Many differences with the modules. I would HIGHLY recommend getting an engine from a 1999-2001.

You are correct.

The 96-98 is M62B44

The 99-01 is M62TUB44 had the Vanos system added.

I personally have not seen anyone do it after finding out what all is involved. You would need the wiring harnass, DME, EWS, key, ignition, aux fan, accelerator pedal (I believe), among other things from the donor car. I am sure there are many things I am not thinking of. Then there is the coding after it's all in. The engine itself will fit right in but there are so many differences in the set up electronically. Hopefully someone here can give you better info.

Quick search found this:

It's the reverse of what you want to do but gives you an idea of what you are up against.

Question 2000 bmw 740il engine cut off and no re-start

well thanks for the info and yes i purchased a 2000 4.4l engine, New question is , car was running and shut off and would not restart and sat for months, no codes stored , battery was dead ! what would cause the car to just shut off, fuel pump, cps sensor or cam sensor. Would a failed timing guide do this ??? NEED HELP ASAP !! WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO THIS ENGINE BEFORE INSTALLING NEW ENGINE .
THANKS !!
ALSO THE CAR , WHEN YOU TRY TO START IT , TURN KEY AND NOTHING !!

Do you get lights on the cluster/dash when you turn the key? If not, you have a battery/voltage issue. Even a low battery would light up your cluster when the key is turned on. There are main fuses above and forward from the battery you might look at. If you are getting lights and no crank, I would still suspect a weak battery. I would take it to have it load tested. Most auto parts stores do this for free. If it's proven good and you have lights but no crank, that's often a sign the key and ews have lost sync. Do you have another key to try? There are other things but need to know if you are getting any lights at all.
