What he said. Either that, or someone figured out how to get 22" wheels on an E39 Touring!

Although that (lowering) sort of defeats the X5's "purpose", I think that it looks pretty cool.

Eh...the X5's purpose isn't really to go offroad, it's so their owners will look cool driving a BMW SUV. In that sense, it fits the X5 well.

I don't know how to take that comment. Is it a slam?

My X5 goes offroad often (just last Saturday). I also camp in it (offroad), and haul tons of crap around. Mine will never be lowered, and I don't give a damn if I look cool (in fact, I look much better in my other cars).

Well, I have two friends with X5 SAVs (both 3.0d) and they use them off-road all of the time. One of them has to because the road to his summer cottage does not really exist. The two times that I was out there with him (once in snow, the other time in mud), the X5 did a damn good job.

I suppose it's good to hear that some people take the X5 off road, although it's a lock that most don't. Personally, I'd take a 5-series wagon over an X5 anyday, just for the benefits in handling (let alone the increase in cargo area).

I went to the dealer to buy an E39 Touring... but then we (wife and I) realized it was too small. Try putting two child seats in the E39, then do the same in the X5. We drove home in the (much larger useable space) X5 that day.

The X5 3.0 is faster than the 525i Touring (E39), and I think it is more fun to drive. We made the right choice, especially when you consider where my X5 has been (snow, mud, dirt, highway, camping, hauling, etc...).

I'm glad you like it. I know what you mean about useable space, and SUVs often have a much more square back seat area. Still, sign me up for a 525iT (heck, our Passat wagon actually handles three car seats in the back seat in a pinch. I expect the Mazda 6 wagon, as its future replacement in our garage, to be able to do the same).

Thumbs up

Pimp my ride too?

Nice wheels -- if only 10' of snow per year weren't an issue here ... I am worried over the driveability of the 18s that come with SP, let alone 20+.
