Recent comparo of luxo V8 SUVs....See results.

Edmunds luxury V8-only SUV shoot-out featuring a 2004 X5 4.4i (non-sport) against the ML500, Caddy SRX, Lincoln Aviator, and FX45. Our X5, which is a 6-yr old design, comes in a very respectable second to the SRX. I'm surprised the Cayenne S and V8 T-reg aren't included in this test. Guess which SUV comes last? Just don't tell our MBWorld friends . Here's the article:

The MB is the oldest design of the bunch.
I drove an SRX and there's no way it's better than an X5.

I agree, the Caddy isn't in the same class (although Caddy is much improved over products from a few years ago)

I too recently drove a SRX

Performance was OK - throttle response was not as crisp as my '01 4.4

Interior was awful in comparison. Maybe at a certain price point it would make sense, but not what they are charging.

The Caddy is an ugly station wagon IMO

Damn damn damn, I knew I should have bought a SRX Are you kidding???? I just read the whole article and I think the X5 just lost out because it only have seating for 5 and not as much cargo space. They threw in other factors such as "what do you think the consumer want"? Cost relative to the other SUV's and other subjective factors. If you look at how they would rate the car without any regards to these, and just for themselves if price was no object, they picked the X5. They really tore into the MB

Thanks for the article.

Good stuff. Why no Cay or T-Reg? Oh well, I still smile every morning before hopping into the X, so I know I made the right choice (though there is always some fun in the something new and different!).

Oh, and IFly, I read the Car and Driver road test of your new toy. Sounds liked you picked not A winnter, but THE winner!

Proof that these comparos are bogus and probably paid for by someone.

The idiot reviews really p1$$ me off! Last time I checked, I have Satellite radio in my 2004 X5 4.4i with Nav. And I know a few others that have rear seat entertainment as well. And the %@^#$ fools can't spean 5 minutes to review the Nav instructions b4 getting in a car that they will be reviewing? These systems are not designed to be mastered in 15 minutes, they are designed to be functional for owners over a period of years. Sure, the X5 Nav is a nice example of German overengineering, but come one, how lazy are these boobs that review these vehicles?!@

Those few points lost on 'features' would have made the SRV victory margin nothing more than a hanging chad or two. Throw in a trunk mount cd changer, and they have nothing to complain about. Bastages!

Oh, and the Lincoln Avaitor?~ WTF is it doing in this comparo? I don't see them including Explorers in V6 tests!

I recently sat in a SRX at a dealer and was not impressed at all. Cheap materials for a $40k-$50k car. I wouldn't touch one!

No kidding, IFlyX5!!! I'd have big grin too if I own one of them. Just about everyone in the auto industry is drooling over the 997. Accolades after accolades and rightly so. It's so evolutionary. I haven't seen one in person yet but I imagine it's ten times better in the metal. Wish you all the best Peter and enjoy crap out of that car.

PS I'm hoping BMW is doing the same with the next generation X5, evolutionary, not revolutionary like the 7 or 5ers. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Except the body looks like they were designed by 4 or 5 different departments who never talked to each other before the final design was approved, and the interior looks like Mattel toy company put it together with leftover plastic pieces.
Hmmmm, did I mention I don't care for the Caddy! Still have visions of old people driving big long gas sucking land yachts with braking and steering made for people who have no feelings in the their extremities.

Edmunds reviews are pretty useless. I'm surprised that MB keeps offering the ML for testing. It's due for replacement next year, and the current one is non-competitive.

I agree with everyone, the Caddy has no business winning this comparo. However, I have to agree with Jeff that this is not your father's Caddy. They're so much improved that they're playing with the Germans now. But still, the SRX is an odd-looking truck.

quick question for you guys: how come the new double vanos x5 isn't anymore faster than the previous model? 0-60 times seems pretty close with Motortrend edging the older one a tad quicker at 6.6 sec -vs- sub 7 sec?
