Can I beat a 4.6is with my modded 4.4i?

Hi, I own a Europe version of a 2005 X5 4.4i. I know that this non U.S. version comes with a little of more HP in the engine. Not sure how many more.

I install also the AC exhaust and have K&N filter in the engine.

I would like to know if this non U.S. engine with all this bolt on stuff, can beat the stock 2003 4.6is X5?? At least be even???

Thanks for any response!!

With those mods, no way you'll come close to matching, let alone beating, the 4.6is.

Air filters just don't substitute for cubic inches...(not that I don't have a K&N myself )

Jeff-

How do you think my 4.4i would fair against a 4.6 or 4.8? Dinan claims that the S2 package has 321hp @5700rpm and 350 lb/ft Torque @3500rpm. Do you think I could keep up with the 4.6 or is this out of the question? Thanks.

I think you'd be competative, but in the end the 4.6is would edge you out. Drex (hdd3md) has an '03 4.6is and is there in the Chicago area (he's in Naperville). You should hook up with him sometime and see how they compare head-to-head.

Talking

My car has 320HP plus exhaust and filter, should be in the 340HP.

Also my car has 6 speed trans and better ratio in each gear.

Plus I took of some weights in the car like spare tires with all that stuff...

I should beat the 4.6is or at least even???

You're living in fantacy land, my friend. Don't you think that if boosting the performance by 20HP was as easy as adding an air filter and better tuning the exhaust that BMW would have done this?

I have to wonder, though, what is your infatuation with beating the 4.6is? Why not the 4.8is? Why not the Cayanne Turbo S?

Because I know I'll not have chance beat the 4.8is or Cayenne Turbo, but maybe can be faster than the 4.6is.

Thanks why!!

Just race the 4.6 with your Supra.

Exhaust and filter won't give you and added 20HP. That's wishful thinking. May be perceived HP gain due to the extra growl you hear.

Fair enough, but you still will have no chance against a 4.6is unless you do some serious engine mods, such as the Dinan upgrades or install the supercharger. A simple air filter and exhaust replacement isn't going to put you into the same league as the 4.6is. Sorry.

However, if you take off the 4.4i badges and replace them with 4.8is badges, that is guaranteed to give you 35hp at the wheels.

Slap a couple of M badges on the thing and you'd be smoking Cayenne Turbos too.

From what I gather..why would you want to do that? From what I see, you seem to have a Supra...unless the Supra is slower than your X

Are you sure that your X has 320 HP and not 320 BHP? In US its HP. A lot of countries outside of US use BHP instead of HP.

Due to the slight differences in the way horsepower is measured in Europe and in North America, by EU-spec, your vehicle might put out more hp.

For example, a stock 330i in EU-form puts out 231 horses in Europe-format. The North American format puts out 225hp...neither is more powerful actually. It's just a slight deviation of measurement.

By the way, BMW engines already are so efficient in power output, that getting any more visible hp out of them would need significant modifications. BMW has already squeezed out some 95% of available juice - this is what has kept BMW at the forefront of engine technology!

TRD,

Here's my advice. You want to beat any 4.6is on the road the first mod you should make should be the skill of the driver.
Now keep in mind, I could care less about 1/4 mile off the line racing, I'm talking about turning and braking.. That's where the real speed is.

Why don't you get yourself to a road course track or even a Skip Barber Driving School and learn how to throw your car through some APEX's.

I know you probably think your a great driver but believe me when I tell you, you don't know ****...
A great driver in a slow car can whoop a novice driver in a very fast car.

But, if all you care about is off the line power.. ignore this note. This note is only for people who REALLY want to push a car to 10/10's performance.

And please don't tell me you know how to drive. Unless you know how to double clutch downshift blipping while trailbrake oversteering while clipping your Apex at speed, your only 1/10 the driver you could be.

B

4.6is is simply a baby 4.8.....0-60 in 6.2 (4.4 is somewhere around 6.8)*, top speed of 150 (4.4 130mph)*

For the money you would spend to SC your 4.4 you may as well sell it and by a 4.6 IMO.

Other then that, by yourself a ZEX nitrous kit for $300.00 and add 50hp to the 4.4 on command. Then the 4.6 shouldn't be a problem any more.

Good Luck
