F22 / F23 2 Series (2014 - Current)
The 2 Series coupe is the replacement for the E82/E88 1 series coupe. Production starts in November 2013 on the 228i (N20) and M235i (N55) coupes. Look for them in dealerships in February 2014. The convertible F23 2 series will follow in the fall of 2014.

Getting hosed on packaged options 230i

So let's start with a 2017 BMW 230i with a Manual Tranny. MSRP is $37,000 CDN.

Let say you just want Apple CarPlay (cause itís 2017) and Sirius Radio (cause you canít live without your dose of Howard Stern in the morning). Surely theyíre included on a BMW, given they are included on a $20k Chevy, right? Of course not...

To get CarPlay, you need the Smartphone Connectivity Package ($750) and the Premium Package Enhanced ($4300).

To listen to Howard you need the Executive Package ($2500).

So, in a nutshell, if you want CarPlay and Sirius radio, you are required to buy a car with $7,550 worth of options.

WTF BMW?

All you really need in a car is a radio and air conditioning.

I agree with the insane cost of options that in most cases cost a small fraction of what they charge.

I have Carplay, and in my opinion it is not worth it in the 230i/M240i implementation, even for the $300 it cost me here in the US. I mostly listen to Audible books, and that app is well integrated into the BMW apps. Carplay is a bit of a pain in that you cannot use it with the regular BMW apps and also, it is a little bit of a pain to toggle between the built in nav and the (slow) apple maps.

I couldn't agree more. I ended up getting the bare basics, use an iPhone/Waze for navigation, and plug in a USB drive for music. It would be better if BMW started thinking of itself as a tech company in addition to being a car company.

Mini is the same way (BMW lite). Porsche is even worse.

I'd have to think long and hard before checking some of those Packages. I'm not a part of the "Apple Herd", so Car-play is out of my wheelhouse. I have an android phone that connects via BT and I can stream all the content available I want to the audio system in the car. It displays what I'm listening to on the center stack too. Rarely do it, so unsure what all I can control on the phone thru the car other than volume. I listen to my own tunes on a thumb drive using "shuffle", and the Car's HD. I find it better than any music station I can access through Sirius or Tune In.

I think a smart phone with TuneIn radio app is the way to go (the Canadian version does come with BT yes?).

Speaking of Porsche...

BMW needs a "GTS" package for those of us that want the "Ultimate Driving Machine." It would have performance components without the fluff. I'm thinking m sport suspension, m sport brake, limited slip diff, sunroof delete, forged wheels, Michelin PSS, hk sound system, Sirius, backup beeper without camera, manual seats...

Touche...I guess those aren't really "performance" parts.

One man's "fluff" is another man's required equipment, hence BMW's and most other manufacturer's "packaged" options. "Marketing" and "Engineering" certainly cooperate when these packages are devised and offered for sale - there is a method to the madness.

I don't know why I would want Apple Play on my BMW. So the screen will look like a Hyundai?

I think carbon wheels are better as there is low rolling mass but I'm not sure.

For sure they are. Less rotating un-sprung weight is always better.
