F22 / F23 2 Series (2014 - Current)
The 2 Series coupe is the replacement for the E82/E88 1 series coupe. Production starts in November 2013 on the 228i (N20) and M235i (N55) coupes. Look for them in dealerships in February 2014. The convertible F23 2 series will follow in the fall of 2014.

M240i convertible facelift

Does anyone know when the M240i convertible will get facelifted? I think I read 2018 model year for 2 series coupe. Will the convertible follow a year later or will it be the same time?

From what we've seen so far, LCI for 2 Series, exterior styling-wise, is just new headlight and taillight design, similar to 3 and 4 LCIs. I don't know for sure but it seems likely convertible LCI would be same time as coupe. 2018 production to begin in July.

Thanks. Trying to decide between this and a Miata. Hmm, decisions, decisions.

I agree with jhm5, it seems likely that the convertible will be facelifted at the same time. Go with the 2 series!

I like the Miata, but I would go with the 2 Series if this car is going to be your daily driver.

What he said. Actually it comes down to what you are looking for and what your budget is.

I was looking at a variety of vehicles including the Miata as my new DD to replace my MINI Cooper S Hardtop. The Miata is a great car, but I eliminated it early on because it was just too small to be a DD. The way the engine and transmission are installed, there is very limited leg room on the passenger side, to the point I knew my wife would not be happy riding in it with me, not to mention there is zero storage space inside the cabin. The 235/240 convertible is very comfortable for driver and passenger. While it will never feel like a Miata due to it's size and weight, it is a really fun car to drive.

I bought a 2016 228i convertible last Feb after owning an 01 Miata for 12 years. I looked at the new Miata too and decided on the 228i for a number of reasons, not the least of which was the power, handling, and ease with which it could be used for road trips. No regrets. I really like my ragtop.

YMMV.

A Miata is much cheaper than a M240i

Yes, there is that - not sure if that's a factor for the OP. Clearly, other than both the M240i and the MX-5 are convertibles, they are very different cars - each excellent in their own way.

No doubt. When I looked at the new Miata though, they'd just recently come out and dealers were keeping the prices high and adding "accessories" that narrowed the gap.

I got my 2016 228i for $40,400 + TTL.

Price is always a factor, but it's not the biggest one. I'd like a raw, fun, manual transmission car that can share DD duties with my aging ZHP.

The cars I'm considering:
Miata
M240i convertible
Boxster
Carrera cabriolet

Cars I've eliminated:
GTI
M4 convertible
Targa 4

Of the ones I'm still considering, I liked the Miata the most, but right now I'm favoring a Boxster with the 911 close behind. Leslierc, you've had both. Do you have any thoughts about Boxster vs. 911? (Also, did you used to live in SS?)

For me, I was between a 981 Boxster and M235i/240i convertible. I ended up get the BMW for a few reasons. Since it was going to be a daily driver, I really needed the large rear trunk with the rear seat back I could fold forward to carry my hockey gear and sailing gear periodically, as opposed to the trunk and frunk. Also, since my car had been at the dealership for over a year, I was able to get it at a really great price and even though it wasn't my first choice of colors, it had a 6 sp MT. Also, since it was new and a 2016, it came with warranty and 4 yrs 50K miles of maintenance (virtually cost free other than gas and tires for 4 years) whereas the only Boxster I could afford would have been low mileage CPO with warranty, but no paid maintenance and the cost of Porsche maintenance and repair scared the crap out of me. I would have loved a 2016 Boxster to go with my 1966 912 (Porsches separated by 50 years) but the BMW was the much better choice for me and I have absolutely no regrets. Good luck with your decision.

"Smokers Package" simply means you get an ashtray with a lid the flips up vs a rubber tray where the ashtray sits and a cigarette lighter in place of a 12V outlet cover. As I understand it, all vehicles coming into the US have the "smokers package". For about $8 you can pull out the ashtray and replace it with the rubber tray (which I did). I also replaced the cigarette lighter with a USB charger.
