This is a good one. They work great and help you diagnose errors so you can address certain problems yourself. Also clear error codes prior to dealer visit and so forth.
The cable itself is very important as some are of inferior quality and won't work properly. So beware of really cheap options.

If you have an Android phone you can download the BMW Scanner app (~$30) and the get a Bluetooth OBD2 reader from Amazon for around $40 and be done with it

Does iPhone has it too?

I'd highly recommend looking at this option. For under $100, you have access to BMW TIS/INPA/GT1/DIS, etc. I bought this setup for my M5 and it has worked flawlessly:

I also ended up buying an older Dell Laptop for $100 since I didn't have a spare laying around. For $200 total, you cant beat the price to diagnose, program, repair and code your BMW.

If you want to get the full suite of software (INPA, NCS Expert, etc) you don't have to spend a dime. Just go to BMWcoding.com they have links to where you can download all of it for free from torrents. Along with the software for your specific car. Just load it on a laptop and you're good to go.
