I see many choices for windblocks between the small roll bars, clear plexy, screens etc. I would appreciate owners advice on what works well left in place almost full time. Main concern is minimal impact on visibility since top will be up much of the time. Thanks to anyone with good advice.
Put the top down and drive. That's why you bought a convertible!
Now that that's out of the way, I have a Z3, and the clear windscreen that I had didn't block my visibility at all. I don't know if it would be any different with a Z4 however.
Mine got a crack in it and I tossed it, haven't replaced it yet, still looking at one from Roadster Solutions.
You have to decide yourself. The only removable versions are the OEM flexible, OEM hard and Windblox. If you just want it between the roll hoops, do like I did and buy the parts from the OEM hard kit for the center section only. Parts numbers can be located in the FAQ. That way you have the center section when you want it and can store in the trunk lid storage holder when you don't. I love mine. About $200 in parts and 30min to install.
Yeah, I personally would vouch for Windblox. OEM worked great, too but I find it rattles at higher speeds. Windblox holds fast no matter what speed I'm going and it seems to do a little better job. Plus, as ChickDr was saying, it is removable and takes less than 2 minutes to get both on and off. For $140, I feel it performs on par with a $500 product. Lifetime warranty ain't too bad, either.
I put a Roadster Solution on my 2007 MR this year - after two years without one.
I like it and recommend it highly. It's not removable, but does not hurt visibility.
It does make a significant difference in air turbulence and even seems to make the AC work better in really hot weather with top down and speeds <50mph
I've had the Roadster Solutions plexiglass for over a year and have been well pleased. Once installed, no reason to remove. Bavauto sells the same item.
I like the OEM wind blocker. It's especially handy to stow it on the under side of the trunk lid when it's not in use. Visibility is relatively good and I can still see what is behind me without a problem.
I loved the Roadster Solutions one for my '08 Z4, to me well worth the $$. Zero complaints and makes a huge difference-I've gone 80+ top down with it in place!
I recently installed the OEM removable mesh windscreen; for the lady's hair-do. At first I thought I wasn't going to like the mesh windscreen, so I'd only have it in place when she is in the car. However, I found that the mesh does a fantastic job of blocking headlights. Especially high beams (wouldn't believe how many people are running around NOVA with a high beam bulb in a low beam socket). Its easy enough to see through the mesh during the day time, and now I wouldn't ride without it at night.
I also like that the roll hoop windscreen pieces include a clothing hangar. Nice place for fancy work clothes to go.
There's a really handy trunk lid storage rail add-on for the removable center piece. The screen just pops in under the trunk lid.
The OEM windscreen does a great job of eliminating wind buffeting around the ears and lower, at 50 MPH and lower. Above 50, there's much less buffeting with the screen in place, but its certainly not a calm storm. The top of my hair deffinitely still feels drafty at any speed with the windscreen in place.
The only negative I can find is that one of the tension springs on the removable center piece keeps coming out of place. I've managed to catch or find it every time, but its just not very well engineered. I think I'm going to hot glue it in place.
The price for all the pieces is well over $650, but I wanted to check off the second to last thing on the "every OEM aftermarket option" list.
I picked up the BMW mesh wind blocker on craigslist but am not sure where the hooks are intended to attach to. Does anybody have instructions for this?
I had the same questions. So u need to raise the top a little if its closed. I'll take a pic in the morning. Its dark now.
