Right hand side mirror stopped working a month after a speaker upgrade and the dealer said it was due to thier fault. Honestly, they can't splice wires even if that was the case? Cost me over $400.00 for a new motor
A dealer isn't going to splice wires, as that is a jury-rigged way of fixing the problem; they are going to replace the entire length of wire, both from a safety standpoint and from a profitability standpoint.
Sounds like whoever installed your speakers put extra strain on the wires for the mirror, and it eventually stopped working. The dealer probably replaced the entire motor because they won't splice wires to make things work again.
Looking at the invoice, the cost of the new mirror motor is relatively minor overall. They can fail over time and quite possible it was dead, and wiring damage was coincidental.
I'd be more concerned about a couple of other things:
- did the new sound system over-tax the battery and will (costly) replacement one be up to it? AGM type?
(dealers appear to set their own prices on the BMW batteries and that one isn't too bad, but the 1-hr. installation charge for it seems excessive)
- why didn't the audio installer look after the torn vapor barrier? Did dealer fix it? No replacement part billed, but maybe they patched it up under (fairly reasonable) labor for Job 4?
(Vapor barriers can be a big problem if they leak.)
When my mirror motor went, i called the dealer and was quoted $806 as they told me the motor only comes with the mirror body!!!
I ended up getting a whole mirror from the scrap yard and doing the transplant my self ($255)
