For whatever reason, I thougth the programmable buttons were only for radio. I should read that manual more closely (RTFM!). )
1-4: Radio stations
5: Grey map/traffic
6: Night mode
It's supposed to show you colored lines where congestion happens - just like Google maps on your computer. But, I am yet to see if this really works. Tried it yesterday by hovering (interactive mode) over to an area of freeway where I know there's traffic, and didn't see any colored lines.
My current setup is:
1. Call home/wife.
2. Call wife's cell phone.
3. Blank
4. Change right-side of split-screen Navi to: Map, direction of travel.
5. Change right-side of split-screen Navi to: Entertainment
6. Night/Day mode.
(Note: My #4 and #5 essentially reverse each other...Can't be done on 1-button, Night/Day mode, as they're different selections. At least I didn't figure out a way for it to be a toggle!)
All boring ones for me, just radio stations , nothing creative! On another note, noticed the X3 and the 5 , have eight shortcut buttons, is the X5 the bastard stepchild ?
1. Sirius stream "Watercolors"
2. Sirius stream "Boston / Philadelphia / Pittsburg traffic".
3. Local AM news station.
4. Locate nearest Diesel station.
5. Toggle iDrive Day / Night mode.
6. Turn off iDrive Display.
#6 is my "legacy" button. Our 2007 and 2008's did not have a Night mode, so I would turn off the iDrive entirely in certain conditions - driving on a 2 lane in swirling snow or pouring rain with oncoming traffic. Though no longer essential, I still find it useful. If my X5 was built late enough to have Combox, I'd probably use this for something to do with BMW Apps.
Yea, you can assign any of the apps ... Pandora, web radio etc to short cuts but it's pretty easy to get to them from the radio button on the controller.
1 - Home
2 - Wife mobile
3 - NPR
4 - Locate Chevron diesel station
5 - Enter new destination by entering street address
6 - Display off
Could use at least two more buttons . . .
7 - Nigh/day mode
8 - Split screen with turn-by-turn directions . . . yes this does show up on the HDD, but my wife likes seeing it too.
BMW could have added an ALT button and doubled the programmable buttons to 10.
I find it interesting that so many people have the split screen. Do you use it to turn the split screen off (for larger nav) or to change the content of the split?
I haven't changed my split since delivery. Its always up on the the "Entertainment" menu. I think Nav does a good job of interupting and showing the necessary turn guidance so I haven't felt the need to mess with it.
Same here, I have it split with the entertainment screen , in fact I used the nav for the first time yesterday, I have the voice off, I thought something was wrong though until when it was time to turn , the arrows popped up over the entertainment screen.
I always leave split screen on whether or not the sat nav guidance is in use (I do kinda like to know my current altitude......). When guidance is on (not often), I use the arrow display since my logic actually relies heavily on the arrow and not so much the map to get directions.
1. Home Number
2. Wife Cell
3. Go Home (Not exactly my home address and 0.25 miles away from my home address for security reason)
4. Split-screen Navi to: On board Info
5. Split-screen Navi to: Entertainment
6. iDrive screen off.
just revisiting this thread. to those who use the presents for the split-screen content, how do you do that??? i tried one setting where i have nav on the main screen and the arrow directions on the split on 1 preset (i was able to do this), but i wanted nav and entertainment details on another button. i couldnt get it to do this however. any help would be appreciated. (2012 x5)
thanks for the replies. for those that use the presets to toggle night and day mode, how do you do that? i was able to set the night mode for navigation, but dont know how to make it do day mode again? do you just use the button to bring you to the night mode option then turn it on? even that doesnt seem to wanna work (saving the screen to the night mode option). i have a 2012 x5 if that helps.

Find you way to night mode in idrive, press it or check it, can't remember, screen goes to night mode, press desired preset button and hold until it connects. Did this last night.
1, home phone
2. spouse cell
3. traffic nav
4. home nav
5. work nav
6. day/night nav
