Hi everyone, I would like to know how to take off the intake manifold. 2001 bmw 530i, 6:cylinder . I removed the disa valve and saw that my manifold was really gunked up. What type of damage will I expect if I do not clean this and drive car.
Welcome to Bimmerfest. I've moved your question to the E39 5 series forum, you'll get more help in here. Search around, I bet this has been covered in a DIY before.
gunked up? carbon? carbon is normal, in the ports... but if it is caked from oil and not cooked off it will eventually choke the engine,, there are cleaning tanks for metals, and special cleaning tanks for aluminum that can use ultrasonic ) high small vibrations. These cleaning tanks have chemicals depending on the type of metal, sometimes heated abut, and they return metal car parts to like new.. just don't use the wrong type,, some are for cast iron, other aluminum. Sometimes soaking in carb cleaner might work if not bad.. but, it is very hard on your body, so not contact... the parts can soak for a week when really dirty.
If your seeing a layer of gunk and carbon build up,,I'd say drive on--everyone one of these cars do that. I finaly burnt a valve in mine atr 260k miles and replace my engine--don't think it had anything to do with the build up in the intake though....It's not going to hurt anything--my 2 cents
