I started this in another thread http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1318867 but I'll try it in it's own. I've searched but everybody has slightly different sounds. It's at lower speeds and no change on turns yet. This is the latest entry, changed the diff fluid this morning 10/30. Old stuff was darker than the new Mobil 1, but not too bad. Must be a sythetic of some sort, not the usual gear lube smell, might have even been Mobil 1 because that doesn't smell either. While it was up on the jackstands I started it and let it idle in 4th gear to try and track down the 'bearing noise' I've been hearing. Heard a scraping/dragging noise from the DS but if I held a screwdriver to my ear and touched it to the caliper, nothing came through. That made me think wheel bearing, but the strangest part was if I touched the brakes enough to lug the motor the sound stayed, but if I pulled the E-brake enough to hear it drag, the sound would go away but slowly come back. WTF?:dunno:
Took the left side down to the hub today 10/31 and couldn't find anything obvious. When I ran it up on the jackstands again with the brakes removed there was no noise except when I first let the clutch out. Even after it was fully engaged it still made a scraping noise until it got up to speed. It almost sounded like the driveshaft was rubbing on something, but only for a short time. Again WTF? Today the ABS light is on, Grrrrrrrrrrrr
