Its almost a crime to put side molding on those beautiful lines on the 3 series. BMW does not make a OEM molding, I think I rather have risk a ding than to put on those cheap after market Ebay side moldings.
I was a little dismayed when I first saw they had left moldings off of the E9x redesign, but the doors seem to hold up quite well. I've looked at lots of used E9x's and the vast majority do not have door dings.
Paintless Dent Repair (PDR) can be used to remove door dings. This is relatively new technology that really works. I am glad my E46 has side mouldings, but they are no match for the doors of a high-sitting SUV that decides to park next to me. I always try to park far away from all other vehicles.
I have paid for PDR about 5 years ago on my other car it's a GREAT alternative to body work. Got ALL my door dings out for me it was worth every penny. $60 each. It adds up fast.
If you pay attention you will notice that none of the new cars have moldings.
