trans failsafe mode in cold weather

I have a 75k mile 540i and in cold weather -- only in cold weather-- the car will start in trans failsafe mode. After driving the car for 20 or 30 miles I can trurn the car off and restart it and the trans is fine. The trans shifts fine when not in failsafe mode and I replaced the battery last year.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks:

I would suspect a bad sensor or loose connection for the sensor, either could be affected by temperature.
