I was at the pool a few days ago and when I went to my car I saw, for the first time, an X1 in the carpark. I first thought 'too small' but it started to grow on me. I like the design a lot better then the X3.
The $50,000ish (Australian) price tag may see it getting into my budget in about a year or so time when we see more pre-owned models. I'm just wondering, has anyone had the chance to compare the X1 to the 3 series? And what did you think?
apart from the body shell, X1 = 3 Xi (AWD) in europe and North America
I had test drove the X1 twice
Rear is a bit tight and interior plastic is about Hyundai quality
I was going to get one but I change my mind as I cannot stand the plastic and sensatec seats (Vinyl-man-made leather)... real leather is an option.....
For the same money I'd rather get 3 Touring, better rear leg rooms, better interior and 50-75KG lighter or Audi Q5 or A4 Avant if I need AWD
If you don't need the ground clearance for off-roading, go with the touring. Lower center of gravity and lower weight mean it will be a lot more fun to drive. It's also cheaper. SUVs are a compromise that only make sense if you really need ground clearance. Just my $0.02.

What? The 328i wagon will be much more expensive than the X1 sDrive28i. We're talking about a big cash difference and there's not much guarantee the 328i wagon will be much, if at all lighter. As the 328i is a portly 3400 lbs, it seems possible the 328i wagon's gonna run in the 3550-3600 lbs range. The X1 xDrive is 3700 lbs, so taking off the weight of the AWD system should put the X1 around 3550-3600 lbs. They're gonna be close in weight. But in price the RWD X1's gonna be much lower priced.
The 2013 328i will cost 37.3k, so with the 2k round up for the 328i wagon, you're looking at 39.3k (at least). The x1 sDrive is $31545.
8k makes the X1 an entirely different beast for pricing.
If it were between touring and sadan I'd go sedan. Just that a x1 is less then a similar spec 3er. But the x1 is too new and too expensive so a preowned 3er will probably be the way to go.
Go with the 3 touring. The X1 isn't bad for an entry-level model that "outdoorsy" young folks can get into, but the 3er is more refined and overall a better package.
I hear you friend. A touring is a logical car given the room, comfort and drive. Yet you need to understand here in Australia a 3er is an expensive car. People who buy them have deep pockets. It's considered an upmarket vehicle. So not many people at all buy the touring as they want the upmarket sedan for the luxury look.
Spent 2 minutes and search for a 3er at www.carsales.com.au and you'll see. Let me know what you think.
Dont bother with the X1, its the only bmw car that is a massive disappointment.
My wife has her X1 for 2 weeks, and after 2 punctures and 2 new tyres, plus a few rattles etc, the damn thing is going back..:thumbdwn:
Further, for Canada's winter weather, the X1 is an ideal choice with it's X drive. It would be a lot better than the 3 series in the snow b/c of it;s height clearance.
BTW, the pricing for an X1 is a bargain compare to the 328.
I owned a 98 Audi A4 that ran through snow better than anything else I've had. Including the taller 2005 X3 as my next car.
Not about ground clearance, it's about your tires.
I put the A4 in snow so deep, it covered the headlamps. It was probably the best winter vehicle I ever had and probably ever will considering every manufacturer's push to put bigger wheels/brakes.
For winter use, my A4 had 15" rims with 195 series Nokians.
My X3 was stuck with 17" wheels as the Smallest size wheel, so I had to use the stock 235 series tire. Because of the width of the tires, it was never as sure footed going around corners as the A4. Despite the fact that the X3 had all forms of traction control and stability control systems. In contrast, the 98 A4 didn't have all those fun bells and whistles.
Given that the stock X1 wheels are 18", I'm not going to imagine it will be able to downsize to something like a 16" wheel with a narrower tire.
On the flip side, in dry/wet weather, I doubt that 98 A4 would ever have the stopping power or the traction that the X1 will...
Here in Canada, the wagon is not available. The 328i starts at $43K, with the same engine as the X1 which starts at $38.5K with X 28i & auto trans. The X1 sDrive is not available as of 2012 and likely will not be here for 2013. We do have a 320i here which starts at $34.5K with a 1.8L 4 with 171HP engine with no X drive and standard trans. No matter how you look at it, X1 is a deal or steal here.
I am also curious what others think comparing the 328 xi to the X1 with the same engine. The pricing is a lot lower when you spec them with comparable options.
I just built one online and it is a significantly better deal than the 3 series. A loaded 28i xDrive is mid 40s and with discounts, it comes out closer to $40k with ED. Loaded F30/F31 won't even come close. Haven't driven one yet, but am looking forward to it
