Hey guys:

I'm usually hanging out in the e39 boards, but my beloved '98 5 Series has finally given up the ghost.

I'm eyeing an 2002 X5 3.0 with about 87K on it. She's in beautiful cosmetic condition. Took it for an extended highway test drive and I was blown away by the power. Not a hint of hesitation. The trans shifting felt completely fluid.

But before take the plunge, I just had a few questions for you good folks:

  • What do you guys think about the 2002 e53 year?
  • Anything I should ask the dealer about?
  • Can I use any e39 parts in the e53?
  • Can the e53 run on an e39 battery?

Thanks for your help!

X5s 3.0i ... some stuff to check.

Cooling system, same as an E39, its a weak point
CV boots; esp the front inners
Window regulators break
CCV clogs, prob due for replacement
Hatch rattles (adjustment), hatch lights pop out (use silicone and glue them in place)
Wiper linkage loosens up and wipers stop (tighten linkage on wiper transmission)
Brakes; the E53 eats front brakes
Vanos seals and VCG likely due for replacement
OFHG leaks; likely due for replacement
A-pillar trim wrinkling (poor quality glue)
Radio display often has burnt out pixels

Thanks for your replies, guys. I did pick it up and I love it so far!

I owned a '98 528i w/ 189,000 miles. Believe me, I know about maintenance costs. The good news from my indie is that a number of parts I recently threw into the e39 can be repurposed in the e53!
