My car has less than 6k mi on it and I have noticed on several occasions that when I cold start my car, I hear a loud squealing/screeching noise that sounds a lot like a fan belt slipping. I first heard the noise while creeping along in slow moving traffic, but I was in denial at that point that the hideous noise I was hearing was actually coming from my car. Now after hearing it several times at start up to include this past Sunday, I can say with confidence this despicable noise is in fact emanating from my car.
I plan to take it in to the dealer, but I was curious if any of my fellow "d" owners has encountered a similar issue. :dunno:
I am scheduled for 13K service next week at Momentum West in Houston. Hopefully my experience will as fruitful bayoucity's. I'll post an update afterwards.
PM me if you want to know which advisor took care of my compressor & belt problem. Momentum West off I-10 between Highway 6 & Barker Cypress is my service center.
The key is to be able to duplicate the problem else they won't be willing to mess with it.
I am taking my car back in for an oil change when I return from vacation at which point I will let my SA know it's happening AGAIN, not a month after they replaced all AC pullies, tensionors and belts.
I just took a Flip video of my car screeching in prep for Monday's visit to the dealer. Hoping they're able to get this issue addressed for the D community. Anyone have any idea if the 328i and 335i are experiencing the same issues? My 07 335i never made a peep...
I just had the nasty "squeal" after a cold start up on my new d with only 200 miles, and I am virtually certain it sounded consistent with an AC compressor bearing problem. I had not even noticed this thread yet, but of course now it has caught my attention.
Perhaps the belts are being tightened too tight at the factory and stressing the compressor bearings?.:dunno:
I took it in today and my dealer was very accomodating, but "apparently" the dealer was not able to replicate the problem. I'm told they loosened it up, and then tightened it a couple times, but no confirmation for certain that the AC compressor tension was the culprit. Anyway, I got to drive around in a nice 135i sport convertible for a few hours and that was a nice touch, but I hope that is the end of that nasty squeal problem for my d.
We had the same squeal that began at approximately 8,000 miles and was intermittent. I finally narrowed it down just by trial and error to the belt that runs the air conditioner compressor. Dealer replaced at no charge--took a couple of hours---problem now solved.
Seems like some have had the belt replaced only to have it return later. I hope the compressor replacement I am getting is a more permanent fix, although some have had it return after this too.
My d is being looked at, hopefully it will get above 90  so they can reproduce squealing. SA has my video recording, and I told him I have 3 more if that is not enough
Getting new rear brakes done as well, not even 17k on them. I thought it was just sensor since pads still look good but I won't argue.
If it were a compressor I wouldn't think the squeal would go away for 2 weeks after having my tensioners and AC belts replaced. It's also weather dependent which leads me to believe it has more to do with the belt/pulley system. I would think if the compressor were bad it would squeal all of the time or randomly as opposed to I can predict under what conditions it will squeal with reasonable accuracy.
Just got my 335d back after three days with the service department to fix "the squeal"(second visit for this). It was determined that the accessory belt was the issue and a "non oem" belt was installed. Compressor and pulleys all checked out OK. The service records indicate that a PUMA case was opened. Today, the car was out for six hours in the sun at 90 degrees and no squeal when it started up..hope it is fixed.
By the way.. had a 328i auto for a loaner. REALLY glad to get the D back...what a dog!!!
This morning I got my d back from the dealer for repair of the "squeeling belt syndrome".
On the first try the dealer was not able to replicate the problem, this time I took videos to provide for evidence. THe service record did document a noisy belt this time, and as I understand it, BMW now has some history of the problem, and sent them a Gates (non-oem) belt overnight express as a replacement.
So far, it seems like the fix is working, and I certainly hope this is the last of the "sqeeling belt" for my car. As fate would have it my neighbor walked right by on Saturday after I started the car to cool it off, just in time to hear Screeeeeeeeeeeeeech.... How embarrasing is that?
Hopefuly this fix will be the solution to resolve this annoying problem for all the d owners who have had the "squeel".
When I went in for an oil change I made mention to my SA that I am still experiencing the problem and that at least a couple of owners said BMW replaced their accessory belt with a non OEM belt. He said it was the first he had heard of it.
Please keep us posted over the next 2 to 3 weeks and if you could post up the details of the part as it is spelled out on your ticket that would be appreciated.
Thanks, I will wait for you non OEM belt guys to report back after a couple of weeks before I waste anymore of my time taking this car back to the dealer only for them to experiment. As usual got in the car this evening to go home and it squealed! :banghead: Hopefully this new belt does the trick.
Has anyone else gotten their compressor replaced other than me & BMW Power? The reason I'm asking because my 2nd set of belts (prior to replace compressor unit ) also got chewed up & it appears the new AC compressor has solved the mystery. :dunno:
Threads like this are both educational and disconcerting, since I'll be seeing my new 335d exactly one month from today. Best of luck to all who have had the squeal, and here's hoping the rest of us don't get it!
The belt my dealer installed on my d is a Gates part number K040325.
I ran it about 125 miles or so today in the 100 degree temp, and so far so good!
I am so happy to (hopefully) have this issue behind me, it has delayed my planned install of the JBD. I'm going to keep running it for a few more days to verify the belt sqeal is resolved, then I'll install the JBD. Right now I am planning to get a dyno test both before and after the JBD install, if there is any interest, I might share the dyno test results.
I'm just leaving to go go for a spin down some of my favorite twisty roads, I really do enjoy driving this car!

I pick up my d from the dealer tomorrow, will report back what belt they put on the car. FWIW, the SA told me today that the original belt had stretched 20mm compared to the replacement belt BMW shipped them. On a side note, the 335i convertible loaner has been a blast to roost around town. Certainly not getting the d mileage, but it's been driven in a 'spirited' manner
After replacing the belt on mine, the squeal has gone away and has not returned as yet. We are consistently seeing >100 degree days, and I leave the AC on all the time. Hopefully, the aftermarket belt has fixed the issue.
My d had the a/c belt replaced this week. The replacement belt is BMW p/n 64-55-7-793-608. Also of note, SA mentioned the original belt measured 20mm longer than the replacement belt....they were unable to tell me if the original was stretched or if it was just a belt that is too long. Car has been quiet so far...
All of these belt replacements make me hopeful my car will be built next week with the proper one. Best of luck to all of you who have had yours replaced already that the fix is permanent.
Folks, thanks for keeping us posted on this. My 335d was just built last week and I pick it up in 3 weeks at the Welt. I can't wait to break in this engine in the Alps, Black Forest and on the Ring. Video and pix to follow.......
Best of luck, should be lots of fun. Hey and while you are there, ask BMW what if anything they are doing about figuring out what is causing this issue.
