During a recent 60k service on my wife's 2013 330xi, the dealer performed the following service. AWD-XDRIVE front and rear differential service (Labor - $210, parts - $53) service performed front and rear diff flush. Fluid used #832512. Then the next entry states X-Drive transfer case service excludes 8 Cylinder 2007 and newer models, service due perfomred tfer case service ( Labor - $94, Parts $52), fluid used #832514. Can someone tell me if the car does need the two different differential services?
Yes on the rear diff and probably on the xfer case. Both are a set of gears with gear oil bath. It'll wear out over time. I do my diff every time I do the TM fluid - about every 40k or so. The amount of money charged is a different story. You can put redline in the diff for cheap (? 10-20 for the fluid) and it's easy enough to do yourself. Like a mini oil change and don't have to jack the car for rear diff. the gear oil stinks though so it can be an unpleasant job if you're not careful with spills/dribbles.
As I advised in your other thread, stay away from the dealer....their main goal is to clean out your wallet. Ask here before spending any money, people here will help you !
Thanks Ahull for your advice. Is there a picture where I can see the front transfer case differential. I am aware of the rear differential.
Yes, Bob. I have been staying away from the d/stealer. I have a reliable service tech. Once my wrist heals, I will start tackling the smaller diy jobs, to gain my confidence. Right now, I am doing a sort of spreadsheet for the past work done on the 330xi so that I can reference as to what and when the work was done.
I am still a novice in this 'fest and will be asking more questions than giving my opinion. Hope my brothers and sisters will understand.
You're in the E46 forum BTW, which is 3-series from about 99 to 2006. A 2013 is either an F30 or an E9n. Diff service is similar, but the 2013 uses a special fluid for the X-drive transfer case.
AHULL, you suggest to change the rear dif fluid every 40k or so? Ive had my 2001 325i since 2007 and its got 171K on it, Im not sure if it was changed before I bought it or not but Im guessing I need to change it??? Are there any other fluids like that I should think about changing? Thanks
I would change it. It's pretty heavy oil so it will last a long time, but not forever. I'm running a supercharger too and drive pretty spirited so I'm definitely putting it through its paces a lot. On a stock 325 you could probably go a lot longer. Maybe 80k would be a good interval.
Other fluids - brake fluid, coolant, ps fluid all should see a change every so often. And TM as mentioned.
