Once right after I cleaned the engine on my MGB I broke up with my girlfriend. Does that count?

I never have, but I know a guy.....

The detail place supposedly got water in the engine, I forget where exactly, I could find out if need be, but they got water in the engine and it got into the cylinders. Car ran like straight sh!t for 3 days. Was mis-firing left and right, running like it was going to die all the time. Just horrible. Well after 3 days, the heat from the engine evaporated all the water in the cylinder and the car ran like brand new again. No damage what-so-ever was permanent.

I'm guessing this is what happened to you? If so, just drive the car and it should be back to narmal in 3-4 days. You have to evaporate the water out of the engine.

Hope this helps.

At least you had an MGB...imagine if you had to acknowledge that she broke up with you over you cleaning your Midget!

If they pull the vanity covers off of the engine, there's a good possibility water is pooled up in the spark plug holes. That could cause your problem. I've seen it before on a few different cars after we've had them steam cleaned. Pop the coils out and check for water sitting around the base of the plug. Use compressed air to blast out any moisture.

You want vague answers? Then just ask a vague question like you did. Are you looking for help fixing a problem? You didn't describe any problem - if there is no problem then we can't help you diagnose it!

If you had said "hey, I had my engine compartment cleaned and now the car hesitates between 1500 and 2500 rpm" then we would have had something to work with ..........

Instead I answered your question - I've cleaned the engine bay several times on both my e46's without a problem.

Geessh! Who's the up tight one here???

From dirty to this multiple times on the E46. No issues.

My method on every vehichle I have owned:
  • Water sprayed from garden hose sparingly(Not pressure washer)
  • Scrubbed/Agitated as needed with soapy mixture.
  • Water sprayed from garden hose, sparingly, to rinse away soapy mixture.
  • Apply favorite dressing
End result:

Looks great - better than new! Mine doesn't look quite so good, as I prefer chunky Blue Cheese.

Apparently he's impatient and re-posted without details...

I wish my engine bay looked that good! I am not too hot to get a hose in there, will probably just use a bucket and some mf towels to clean the grime, which is mostly dust/dirt, nothing serious.

engines get wet when it rains and car goes though puddles.. Unless a hose is used with-out regard while engine is running OR system is energized(like listening to radio while washing car)...very little should happen..I have soaked the heck out of BMW's and other cars in the past and gotten a misfire or two that lit the check engine light..Once car was dry all was well and ran smoothly..i then reset light with OBDII scanner.

When it rains or you go threw water, the water is not splashing up all over the engine..IMO any time you wet the motor area down, you are running a certain amount of risk...taking precautions like covering electrical components and such, will greatly reduce those risks, just splashing the water loosely on the engine is upping the risk to high for my comfort level

Coudnt find the +1 smiley so this one will have to do.

I dont go to the trouble of covering all the electrical boxes/panels/connections when I detail my engines. But I am aware of the risks I undertake by not doing so.

The point dboy11 makes is a good one and should not be dismissed or overlooked -- that there is a certian amount of risk gained by introducing water to the top side of the engine comparment.

Why do you think BMW goes to all the trouble of mounting all those plastic splash panels under the car ??? And have extensive rubber gasketing under the hood & in the shock tower area???? They want to keep the water OUT, where it belongs....with all the uber-sensitive, expensive sh!t on these cars, you want to do everything possible to prevent water infiltration into the engine compartment. A spray bottle of Castrol Super Degreaser, a bucket of hot water, an old toilet brush, and some rags is all you need for a good underhood detail job....

I dont how much a used toilet brush would clean but...maybe a new & clean one would be better
