03 m3 for $6500?

Hi folks. Can you folks tell my if thiis is a good deal? I know you can't trust blue book got these M3 cars. And it varies somewhat between sources also. .

$6500

Chen title
Mechanically sound. No check Engine light
Regular maintenance
Smg. Owner reports never any problems
Looks better than its age and miles for sure
Coupe 2003
BUT 222600 miles.

Want to add that he has 40 high quality photos of every detail. And even undercarriage and subframe. No damage. And no cracks. Claims smg works fantastic. Of course he says mostly highway miles.

The miles are high dude, they don't make them like they used to but if you must I would take the 6sp. Good luck.

But it's a Bmw!! . I think a manual is Defiinitely way to go. If I could inspect and drive car I would buy it. But for 6300 maybe 6100 I'm not sure I can pull the trigger. Owner says it drives perfectly.

Less miles, less money, and its a stick. I'd say its a no brainer. Be prepared to spend $$ a cheap M3 will need something for sure.

Why do people think it's high miles? I really don't 177k miles is high. I've had at least 4 vehicles with over 200k miles and all ran fantastic. Very minor issues like small tear on seats. Or paint issues. But mechanically all were solid. Cars can run 300k + miles of well taken care of and not damaged. IMHO

The S54 is not you average go 300k engine. Spend some time researching. It requires valve adjustments every 30k. An oil change will cost $100+ and only one oil is approved. Most are in agreement that rod bearings are only good for 100k. The Vanos system in this car is a weak link as is the rear subframe.

I'm not saying you will absolutely have probs with this car just that when you do it will be expensive. Has either car had the cooling system replaced? Most owners change the cooling system out at 100k. So at 170k your gonna be due for that soon DIY $1000 pay someone else 2-3 grand depending where you go. Valve adj will be $1000 if you can't DIY. This is the prob with an E46 M3 even though you are getting it for peanuts its still a $60,000 car and needs treated as such.

^This.
Everything depends on the maintenance history. Buying an M3 not knowing what has been done and when it's a time bomb.

Well some of the maintenance history he has. But there is too much unknown. I can do some DIY but not valves. I know they need adjustment but owner claims every 30k miles is BS. i also think he is hiding something but not sure what.

If I had time and money to keep the car going for years, I would jump at it. But I don't. Looks like I will opt for a Miata. They are cheap inexpensive pieces of great fun! And I hear great for autocross.

Google is your friend. 30k is what is recommended. I would def walk away from a car that has not been properly maintained. You will have better luck for sure with your budget in a Miata.

It is recommended from Bmw to check the valves every 30k but says does not always need to be adjusted. It also said most every other car needs valves adjusted every 50k miles. Yeah right!!

I do my own so I can tell you what the discrepancy there is. You have a range for tolerance. I (and many others) prefer to attempt to get all the valves to the middle of their specs. However BMW will not adj a valve that is within spec even if its at the tight or loose end of the range. With that in mind my last adj probably only required two to be re shimmed however I swapped shims on 6.

Okie dokie.
Well I really wanted. Cheap m3. But that's ok. In a couple years I will opt for a 2008+ m3 (which I test drove last year). And did it drive great. However my current 335i with its ecu retune has 355 whp as tested on Dyno. And with Coilovers it will be a force to be reckoned with! Already have 19" MPSS. . I just want a toss able autocross weekend fun car. The Miata shall it be!!

No rust. Just some wear and tear in the seats. Well I prefer a manual but o think this m3 is well taken care of. I think transmission is fine. But I'll try to post some pics.
