Bonnet Locked - Lever is slack (cable snapped?)

Any advice/pics welcome! I brought my '05 X3 to the garage earlier for a summer check up, and when I went to pick it up, they said they hadn't been able to open the bonnet. The internal handle had no tension. I was very surprised - it was fine the last time I opened it a couple of months ago. (It is indeed now completely slack - it's not pulling anything!) Maybe the cable snapped, when they pulled it earlier in the garage? If it did, they weren't admitting it.

In any event, I now have a locked bonnet and I'm not keen to pay BMW garage prices to get it sorted out, when the vehicle is 12 years old. Is this a job that a novice could take a look at? Even if I could get the bonnet popped, and have my usual local mechanic replace the cable?
