If anyone definitely finds out the cause of the mysterious "sound" when driving with the E93 top up, please post for all to read. I think it might be tires but not completely convinced.

That was just a beautiful dialogue. I don't know wether I should raise a glass for a toast or shed a tear.

Randall, You replaced your RFTs just after picking up your car. What new tire did you Buy?
If you are still noticing the "sound" with a different non-RFT, then maybe it's not the tires. I'm still trying different things to see if I can zero-in on what is causing it.

Shed a tear..... Ipod is fixed. Even though it was out of the given dates by BMW, same solution. My car's alignment was off and it is feathering the tires. Not sure if that is why the noise but a car with 3000 should not feather tires. Check your tires as well and let me know. It is mostly the front although the "sound" seems to come from the back, I think.

Glad your i-pod is working as it should now Lets hope they can do something about the feathered tires now. Did you noticee the fluttering on the way home? Did you get a chance to feel the outter tread on the front tires yet? Feels pretty bad in my opinion and im almost postive thats whats causing the noise.

I not only felt the fluttering but you could actually feel and SEE the feathering. I will call DJ today. I think Jason was pissed. Never mentioned you. Is that BBQ on Aug 26 open to all? Where is it? Can I ask to meet you when I go back to Reeves? Thanks

Called DJ and told him I wanted new tires, all 4. That I did NOT want Bridgestone again because that is the tires that everyone complains about. Not suprised that Jason is is mad because it is him who always has to deal with the upset customer. Tell him not to take it personnally. I think he was a great advisor @ Audi and nothing has changed. I just want my car right and will take nothing less. Do I need to "sign up" for the BBQ or just show up with money/food or drinks ?

So are you getting new tires? You can pm me if you want to keep it private...

Just show up to the BBQ. I'd be nice if you added your name to the list though so we can keep track of who all is coming so we know how much food to make and such

The green light on the switch would not go off when I would close the roof until I pressed the switch down a second time. Only then would the roof properly latch. The dealer installed a new microswitch, and now the roof closes properly. The work order from the dealer states "removed & installed catch, installed micrswitch guide". BMW issued a service bulletin for this. My car is quiet. Even though I had never noticed a fluttering noise, perhaps the catch/microswitch isssue is causing the fluttering.

I chose the Yokohama ADVAN S4 tire in OEM sizes mounted on my OEM 189 style wheels. I have not noticed the "fluttering" sound since installing the tires but I have to admit that I have not done much "top up" driving. I will post if I do hear it again. BTW, I am very happy with the tires and with my car. No problems, knock on wood.

I would like to know, i hear that noise consistently at about 50mph, if its the tires i want new ones for sure. BMW sent an info CD to watch and regarding run flats, it showed that they are safer on a blow out, less likely to come off the rim as conventional tires during speed. they showed an experiement with air released at a certain speed while cameras captured the results. Image how many people with converts who are not on this site who are having the same noise problem.
I want to know!

Relax man. My cars alignment was off that is why they fearthered. I will let you know if the two are realated or not. I have no clue as of yet. It may two separate issues. don't go asking for tires randomly . Look how your tires are wearing first.

still have a 'buffeting' 'fluttering' noise between 40-60 mph on my convert with top down. What is the end result of all this investigation.(three pages worth) My car has been doing it all along, I have only 1000 miles on the car. Is it the tires? or what? It seems no one is discussing this further. Is annoying. prior thanks to anyone who helps with the info.
THANKS

I am still waiting for tires on my car and will let you know of the results. It seems to be tire related to me. Windows to no affect it and it is in the range of speed where tires seem to usually act up 40-70 and mostly 57mph and getting worse. Wind buffeting does not get worse with time. Have you taken your car to the dealer? My dealer is trying very hard to help me and figure it out but nothing yet.

I am confused. Your noise is with the "top down"? Others have said it was with the top up. Which is correct?

Sorry, top up windows down or up, cracked or fully open, noise is apparent. So is the design of the roof line? the A pilar? and if so why doesnt everyone have the sound with their convert? Going to the dealer is useless, they will ride with me and agree and then what? Ive read about recall on RFT with Bridgestone, but what I read those were 17". Either way RFT's are still in the infancy stage of development.

thanks for the help

I drove my car today for the first time at highway speeds with the top up and guess what? The sound is still there even with the non-RFTs, so I conclude that it is NOT due to the tires. Must have something to do with the design of the roof, maybe the hinges? This is a real shame as I doubt there is anything that can be done. I just turned up the radio to drown it out but it is definitely noticeable.

I test drove a 335 vert a few weekends ago with the top up and I also noticed the fluttering/buffeting noise @ around 50 mph (the radio was turned off). I should have mentioned it to the sales person. But, I just sped up to see if it went away and it did.

That's pretty sad for such a great performing car. I'm hoping a solution comes along before I order mine.

Mine does it between 50-60mph. But I've noticed it seems to be only when I first start driving the car, not after it has been on the road for an extended perod of time.

Based on your early feedback, I thought, great, it's the tires. Guess not

I also notice that it seems to be first when the car is cold and specially on rainy days. Has anyone tried combinations with the trun open (craked open) windows etc? It is amazing how it is exactly at the same speeds with wind or no wind. I have a friend who is a race car driver and he told me to put heavy things in the trunk such as sand bags and he bets it will go off. He thinks it is a drivetrain issue.

You should have your dealer check the alignment of the TOP. If it's not closing completely, it will make a fluttering noise. My top switch and catch had to be replaced. My car is quiet.

Thanks. Did you notice a fluttering noise prior to aligning the top and THAT is why you went to get it checked? How can you tell because mine LOOKS aligned... thanks again

No I didn't notice the noise, but I hardly drove the car with the top up. I was having trouble completing the closing of the top. It wouldn't lock until I took my finger off the button and then pressed it again. I ran into a guy at the Jersey shore while on vacation who had a similar problem. He told me that eventually I would have trouble closing the top altogether. My clue that this is where the fluttering noise may be is that the dealer replaced the catch as well as the switch. The guy also told me that BMW issued a service bulletin for this problem. Good luck! I hope that this is the cause of the fluttering because it was an easy fix.
