I think I've made up my mind NOT to buy a 6 now! This top issue and BMW's response (or lack thereof) is ridiculous. So long 6 Series!

I feel badly for the trouble you guys have had; it's a shame. If I had been reading this thread before I bought a 6 vert I may have chosen another model as well. So far, mine hasn't had the top unlocked problem...if it does, it won't last beyond my CPO warranty. Keeping my fingers crossed!!!

Awwwww. KG... arrrgggghhh. Yeah, the temperature is changing to cooler so the cables will contract and pull out of spec. At least that is what apparently happened with mine.

And all that would be fine if the alarm did not lock out all the electronics and leave my windows frozen in the down position in the rain, or on the highway.

...or frozen in the down position when I am rushing to the airport and have to leave the windows down in the airport car park while I fly out of town.

I mean... 13,000 cars at the airport, and mine is the only one with the windows down on it. ??

The good thing was, that the thieves thought it was so obvious a person would not do such a thing...that they thought it was a police trap.

LOL!!!

I just got my top replaced by BMW - so far no issues with it at all and we're well over 90 degrees on a given day. I should note that BMW has what was referred to as a "new" procedure to adjust the sensors - you should have your dealership contact the regional service rep about this. My foreman is VERY knowledgable about BMWs (he's the only guy that touches the cars belonging to the owner of the dealership) and even HE didn't know about it.

Okay, i've gotten the red/amber light of death on my 2005 645 top. It's happened a few times this summer but as of 9/18 the light has been on. I came out from work that night and it was on before i even turned the car on. So, i have an appointment on Monday (9/28) to get it fixed. Mine is no longer under warranty so i wonder what all this is going to cost me especially if i have to take it back multiple times as some of you have described. I'll update ya'll when i know something. I just got the car this January so it's still "new" to me and i love driving it with the top down so the past few weeks have been a bummer.

It sounds like it's just starting for you. I'd tell them it's a known issue with the top sensors and see if they'll goodwill it. My circumstances involved the same problem 10 times over the course of a year, including the initial problem showing up while the car was still under the original warranty.

Does this problem happen to cars with black tops more than the gray top. Most say it is a temperature issue with the sensors getting hot from sitting in the sun. Those of you that are having the problem; do you have a black or gray top.

Here's a twist to this issue. Went out to my '06 650 on a 36 degree morning. When I went to open the trunk, it would not open. Then I noticed the LED light that indicates convertible top function (between the open/close buttons) was flashing red. I drove the car into work with the light flashing and idrive indicating "convertible top unlocked - reduce speed". When I later opened my windows - they would not close. Stayed on for the hour into work and then the hour back out to the dealer at the end of the day (car lives in a valet parking garage during the day so presumably was started a few times inbetween). Fortunately, the condition remained for the technicians to observe the behavior.

After a day of diagnostics, turns out the dealer replaced the computer that controls all the interior functions of the car (top, windows, locks, seats etc). So far I haven't had any problems, although its only been a week and hasn't been as cold again yet. Not sure if others with similar problems have tried this fix but curious to see.

I had the issue come up once in hot weather but also again in cold weather (went out to the car in the morning and the red light was flashing - I hadn't operated the top in several days). The last time, the system wouldn't reset, and it would let me open but not close the windows. I took it to the dealer and they replaced the electronic module that controls the top, windows, etc. No problems since.

How can a company build a car like the Six but can not get the gremlins out of the roof?

No sense of taking your can in for service when they can't fix it!

I'm still hoping for a solution and recall.

I wonder if its time to see what a class action lawsuit might accomplish for all of us 6er 'vert owners. Especially if some owners are getting new roofs over sensor issues and others aren't.

Anyone hear of the E46 subframe litigation?

2005 645ci convertible Top Not Locked Problem

I recently bought a used 2005 645ci and the top worked perfectly thru the spring and in Houston the weather has just started to get HOT. So this weekend I got this same alarm and continual "Ding" warning as I speed up and I have to open the trunk using the key as the trunk button doesn't work.

Any one out there know how much this is going to cost to fix NOT under warranty? My local BMW service advisor here in League City said that he has had no problems like this and that I'd have to bring it in.
