BMW x5 xdrive35i Sport vs. Comfort Seats Exchange

Hi All (posted in the welcome forum 1st which was wrong),

I have a brand new BMW x5 xdrive35i and love the car except for the Sport seats. Both my wife and I find them very very uncomfortable. I went back to the dealer and asked about exchanging seats for Comfort seats and of course pay the price. I was told it would be very difficult, would have to measure rails, etc etc. Suggested I see if anyone out there would like the Sport seats for their Comfort seats. Any advice would be appreciated.

I travel a lot from Northern Va to S.c. and N.C.. My wife complains about seats all the time and we have bought car cushion seats to adjust height above the lumbar support. Reading posts here it is obvious many have found these sports seats very uncomfortable.

Suggestions please -love my new 2015 x5 but need to change these seats.

Quick question to clarify: Sports seats = standard front bucket seats in the X5 or do you mean the front bucket seats in the "M Sport"?

Trade it for a completely new car. The hit on depreciation will be similar to the cost and labor of retrofitting comfort seats.

My guess is that even if you find some one who is willing to do a trade, and who has the same color seats, and add up the costs for removal and install, it would be more expensive than trading the car in for one with the the comfort seats. I can't imagine anyone want to give up the comfort seats. Certainly anyone leasing can't do so, and anyone owning will have a car that won't match production details. I find the comfort seats to be the most comfortable car seat I have ever sat on.

Also, be mindful that regardless of what you do, the ventilated seats have less cushion (dealer comment).

I would ask the dealer what the cost would be to exchange the car if your need is inflexible.

BMW does not sell a whole seat kit as far as I know. By the time you order all the components, electronics and matching covers, I would be surprised if it comes out cheaper than $7k. It would be great if you could get someone who has had first hand experience with this. Mine info is research and deduction based.

I want to thank you for responses, sorry for slow response been away in S.C. Think I will go to dealer tomorrow and check on how much trade in value I can get. Bought it 12/13/14 and already have 6550 miles on it with multiple trips to SC and NC. That could affect trade-in. Will let you know what Sterling BMW offers me.

Trade it in. Best you could do is trade someone sport seats for standard seats. People that specially ordered comfort seats probably wanted them or nappa leather, neither of which you have. Did you previous X5's have sport seats or comfort seats?

(Wed) No I never had a BMW before- my first and love it except for the sports seats. Probably need to see if they will let me drive a x5 with comfort seats before I request trade.

Thursday --> I went to see car salesman at Sterling BMW (Va). To my surprise when I mentioned 'Comfort' seats' he had no idea what I was talking about. He said an upgrade would be the 20-way power multi-contour front seats and one step higher would be luxury seats which adds the ventilated seats. So as much as we have been talking about 'comfort seats' in many discussions on this forum -it seems they do not exist anymore. He did finally say that comfort seats are only for the back seats.

I have the basic sports 10 pt seats. So are these 20-way power multi-contour front seats comfortable and are they equated to what we call comfort seats.

Going to drive one today or tomorrow.

They are available but are presented in an unclear manner. Your salesperson is clueless. They are technically called "Multi-contour seats" and are automatically added when you add a nappa leather interior.

Well he did say I would prefer the 20pt contour seats. Do not want to critizize him too much but I was surprised he did not recognize 'comfort seats'. But he was adamannt that the 20pt powered contour seats was the answer to my back discomfort and recommended to add the ventilated (luxury package) seats. I did not get into the extra cost to trade in my X5 yet.

I have the luxury multi-comfort heated and ventilated Nappa (what a mouthful) seats and they are indeed the most comfortable seats i have ever sat on. I test drove a vehicle with the sport seats and loathed them.

One thing with the vented seats is that people have said that the cushion is not as plush as the non vented seats. I don't know how true this is but I am just passing on the information that I read previously.

Going get a loaner tomorrow with luxury seats and drive around for the day- see how it feels. I also heard about ventilated seats not as cushy -wonder if that is true??

After I drive it will get into trade value of my car. I paid 66k for my BMW x5. Real curious what they will ask for trade. You guys are great.

Because the MC seats have so much adjustability, take the time to really work through the various adjustments to optimize your comfort level. Some folks have reported that it took a while to find just the right spot, but once they did, it was perfect. I have the MC seats (non ventilated) in my 15 35d and really love them. Good luck!

Well I drove aX5 yesterday for half day 20pt contour seats and it was better. But the seats were still Dakota leather. I asked about driving a X5 with nappa seats. Now here is a question for you. The dealer had over 50 BMW X5 SUVs, guess how many they had with nappa seats??

I will save you the time- ONE. Salesman said the Dakota are more durable especially for families with children. I found that very strange -kind makes me worry about getting nappa seats. I am going to drive that one on Monday.

In my opinion, the Nappa are much nicer and smoother. I have Mocha Nappa leather with the Nappa package and luxury seats (adds ventilation and comes with multi-countour). Absolutely love the look and comfort.

Regarding the trade in option, ask the GM to go the BMW Corporate route to see if they could do anything. I had a bad experience with a 535 diesel a year or so ago and Corporate kicked in cash to get me into another car to make me happy. At the very least they should provide a contact person at Corporate. Doesn't hurt to ask...

So now they are saying the only way to get Nappa leather is to order the Interior Design Pure Excellence -wow!!! Also was told Nappa only comes in 2 colors now Ivory & Mocha - sound right?

Can someone tell me what this means "Mocha Nappa is a no cost add on with a "Line"."

I test drove a X5 with each Sport, Multi-Contour and Luxury seats and I settled on the Luxury. I did not find the padding to be any less nor every not enough. Love the upgrade, especially only $50 more on my build from MC to Luxury seats.

multi-contour....meh!

My wife has a 2014 F15 with ventilated multi-contours in dakota leather and I find them to be the most uncomfortable BMW seats I have ever experienced (this is my 5th BMW all of which had either multi-contour or sport seats). The seats are hard, rough (the perforations) and have raised seams. I have spent hours while driving on a long trip trying to find a comfortable position without success (in contrast my M3 seat and her prior X5 are extraordinarily comfortable). The only way I ever drive her car (which is rarely) is to use a cheap seat and back cushion I bought from Autozone. Without the cushion my back/butt (which have no medical issues) are hurting after 15 minutes! FWIW, she thinks the seats are fine!

This only further shows the only way to decide what works for you is to try it yourself. Everyone's taste and idea of comfort can be different. Only way to be sure is to try it.

I'm planning on getting an F15 35d and I'll be trying out as many of the options I'm considering before putting in my order (multi-contours, 20" wheels etc.).

The problem here is that 99.9% are in favor of the MC seats... yes everyone is different but we have not ever seen 50% people saying MC seats suck and the other 50% says MC seats are the best ever... I feel totally opposite that the E70 MC seats & E60 MC seats were great and the F15 MC seats were slightly better with the cushion and the Dakota leather feels a lot softer.

Well I decided to trade in old 4.5 month old X5 and replaced it with new X5 with Mocha Nappa leather seats plus multi-contoured. Just drove to SC from No. Va. and the seats were awesome. Way softer, no comparison. My wife agreed 100%. Thanks for all the feedback.

Well done!

A lot of settings on that seat....it took me weeks to find the the most comfortable, among many comfortable positions.

I agree that MC seats are usually awesome......In my opinion something was wrong with ours from the get go but the BMW service writers just looked at me like I was crazy! I even tried calling the BMW 800 number but they just directed me back to the dealership. I have also tried to test our seats versus similar ones but unfortunately there are very few X5's on the lot and ventilated MC seats in dakota leather are not common.

If the X5 was my daily driver I would have had to have sold it.......the seats are that uncomfortable.
