X5?

I currently have a 2008 x5 4.8i. I've had it for a couple years and have replaced front and rear suspension. The engine is starting to show early warning signs of Valve stem seals so I decided to trade it in. After doing a lot of research, I settled on a Grand Cherokee SRT. The one I decided to go with is at a BMW dealership and they're trying to convince me to look at a newer X5. I told them I'm concerned with the longevity of the 8 cylinder engines. They are suggesting I test drive a 6 cylinder version to see if it's enough power for my driving habits. So... my question is...

Are the 6 cylinder engines more reliable than the 8 and what are the common problems I could expect out of a newer X5? Thanks in advance for your responses.

BMW has never made a reliable 8cyl. Enjoy the 6, it has plenty of power get around town.

Yes, the 6 cylinder engines are BMW's bread and butter. They are very reliable engines. They have always had issues with the V8s.

X5?

The N55 engine in the 35i I believe is the same one from the LCI E70. Obviously since the F15 chassis is fairly new not a lot of issues have become known. If you look at the LCI E70's not too many issues came forth from the 35i's, with the water pumps being the most common and essentially certain to fail.

In regards to the 50i's yeah BMW has never made a V8 that's been reliable as mentioned, powerful but not reliable. If you plan on keeping this vehicle for longer than the warranty period I'd suggest going with the 35i and following routines for oil changes yourself as opposed to the iDrive, so an oil change every 5 to 6K miles or so.
