Question Engine oil leak

I changed my CCV valve 3 years ago and it completely stopped the exhaust smoke and it stopped the usage of oil. The problem I have now is oil leaking on to the floor from the drivers side engine area. I took the plastic pan and the metal pan off underneath the car and looked to see where it was coming from. It seems to be coming from up high, above the oil pan so it's not the oil pan gasket. It's also not the valve cover gasket as there is no oil stains there.

It's seems to be in the area of the CCV valve. Would this valve be defective this soon ( original BMW part). Or would a broken or loose hose cause oil to drip down?

One more problem. When I turn the engine off, after 10 seconds I hear a whoosh sound like air being released. See the YouTube video. I've never heard it before. ( this is not my video but the sound is identical).

Re: oil leak...inspect the oil filter housing, gasket leak here is common on cars with I-6 motors.
Good luck/Bill

Interesting. I never thought of that. I did see oil under the power steering pump but couldn't see the oil housing area. Too many things in the way. I'll post back when I get it fixed. May take a week or so. Thanks!!!

If on the power steering pump then the OFHG is definitely your issue.

Whoosh sound after turning car off is 100% normal, all my E46s (3 of them) have done it.

Oil leak on the drivers side is probably a bad oil filter housing gasket, but could be the VANOS feed hose (bolts to the back of oil filter housing), and could be cracked or broken CVV hoses. Smoke test would tell show you if it was the CVV hoses.

Do you know where that whoosh sound is coming from?

I'll check the vanos feed line and see if it's that.
Thanks for the help!

I believe it is from the DISA valve letting air pass by when you turn the car off. I could be wrong though.

Just to eliminate benefit of doubt, all e46's make the wooshing sound. All of them.

As for the oil leak, good luck.

I bought one at autozone last week for $5 and change. That seems a little high.

The gasket was only $10 but I bought an oil filter also to change my oil and rounded it all together. The gasket was an original BMW part but the end result was no more oil leaks! Gotta love it!
