My vehicle has 130K and today I was told by a foreign repair shop mechanic that the oil leak "looks like front crank seal". Not a major constant drip but a little more in the last couple weeks. Wanted to get an opinion as to what may be going on.
Has anyone out there with an X3 had this problem? Is this something to be expected with these miles? Considering paying the money and getting a second opinion from a dealer.
Would appreciate any feedback. Anyways, what is a front crank seal? Anyone have any photos of it?
The mechanic I took it to wasn't in Virginia. It was in Roxboro, N.C. Been in business about 30 years but I was wanting a second opinion just because he said that he wasn't absolute absolute and that the dealer would probably have more bells and whistles used to diagnose what may be going on. As we know, computers can be really sensitive on our cars.
If you're willing to make the drive, there's Shade Tree Garage in North Raleigh which does a good job specialising in BMWs and can do most jobs. Otherwise there ain't much between southern VA (Clarksville/Keysville/South Boston) and the Triangle area in terms of BMW shops.
Perhaps slightly off-topic, but have the valve cover gaskets ever been done on the car? Usually they start to leak at that kind of mileage on the M54 engine.
This is what I thought initially but when he said front crank seal I was a little confused. VCG would definitley need replacement with 130k on the clock
