My M5 is Clicking
So I bought my car 1 week ago and I started hearing this clicking noise in the engine yesterday. Video Below.
The crazy sound stops after driving down the street. Then it sounds like the "Diesel" sound that everyone talks about. After hearing the sound from the engine I decided to take my car in for an oil change. When at the shop they told me (Just by listening to it) that is was the timing chain. Then again I will not be returning to this shop since they where shocked to have a M5 there in first place. After paying for the oil change I called the dealer. The guy asked me if I could bring the car to there shop. So I did. They looked at my car and told me that it was a Timing chain tensioner on the upper chain on the left side. There isn't a check engine light on but they did checked for codes and the code came back with 88. Which they said had to do with the ABS system which is getting fixed already. Anyways. They ordered the parts for my car to fix the tensioner. They said I can drive my car for right now and I should be okay. Is that true? I just want to make sure it is safe for me to drive. Thank You and sorry for my english._a_ |

You should purchase one of these http://www.peakeresearch.com/fcx3.htm .. there are many codes that come up in BMW's without them setting off the check engine light.
I am not sure if this will help you with the current problem, however it will definitely save you money/time in the future! How many miles on the M5? Has it been abused?

That's a common sound when your timing chain guides and tensioners take a ****.

I'd bet timing chain too. Might be ok to drive if you baby it, but you're probably better off giving it a rest. If you can find a reputable independednt BMW mechanic that doesn't try to upsell on everything, that's the way to go for these cars.
