Should be able to get them at Auto Zone, O'Reilly's or most any auto parts store. Of course you'll have to buy a pack of two for $5-6.00. I've not tried for the BMW but my MB 380SL had some odd bulbs for the dash lights and I was able to get them
I'm fairly certain I used the same bulb in both places. It's directional, so you can point the dome light down a little so it doesn't shine in your eyes when you open a door, plus they use a lot less power so you don't have to worry about running down the battery with the trunk or door open.
There are lots of sellers of these, including ebay and amazon sellers.
I went to Pep boys (auto parts store) looked up the bulb size they had listed found out it was the wrong one. In the end I went to the dealer and got it for less then 2.00 dollars and it fits.
+1 on 99328ic statement. The book for the bulbs is incorrect at Autozone. You will actually need to get the next size up in length to fit the trunk. The bulb specified is to short.
I am going to second the led suggestion. I also put some LED's under the dash on both sides for floor lights. It is bright enough to read a map with just the dome light, they also last a lot longer, for me anyway. After these perhaps some nice high pressure headlights?
