So long story short. I've been working since I was 16 and have saved up enough money to help my dad with a lease. I'm 20 years old and have driven an a4 for the past 4 years.*
As my lease is about to end I have ha my sights set on a 135i loaded with the lease =ing $570 a month. I can pay 300 of that each month for 3 years.*
But then my dad told me, if I plan to buy the car at the end of the lease, I should get an m3. My family has the means to pay the $930 lease a month and I would be paying $400 a month if I got the m3
My question is to all you devoted bimmer fans, is it wrong for a 20 yr old to get an m3 car? I feel like it is a car you should work years for and I mean I have save up money which is rare for a 16-20 but still? Will I have to deal with haters and jealous kids/adults saying who is this kid with an m3 not knowing I'm paying for almost half the lease?
Comments please and this isn't a troll topic or anything. I'm just in-between getting a beautiful car ( that I would literally keep till I die) now or waiting till I'm older and have the pleasure of saying, I bought this m3 on my own. Thanks.*
+1 i don't understand that either; from what I have heard on this forum, an M3 is too much car for a young adult. The 335i would be all yours as stated above and is a fantastic car
A m3 is too much car for a 20 y/o. The first BMW I ever drove was a friends then brand new 95 m3 and within seconds I almost killed both of us due to lack of knowledge on handling that kind of power.
Get a 128i or 328i pay for it yourself and you will have out respect. Or use the money for an MBA or on dating girls with your current a4...which btw...is much nicer than the Chevy cavalier I drove when I was 20 .....
If I said how I old I was with an M3 I'd get flamed on here for sure. But then again mine is a E46. Not an E9x. Just get the M. So what if your parents helped you? You'll be driving one of the greatest cars ever made. A 135i is not nearly as exciting as an M car.
The E92 M3 is an ungodly car, to be honest it's perfect minus 2 flaws. First off, the gas mileage is atrocious. Second, full coverage insurance for someone your age WILL exceed half that lease payment or close. I owned a E92 M3 when I ran my own insurance agency, mine was a white hardtop convertible with red fox leather and a DCT transmission. Incredible was an understatement lol. I got funny looks, but you have to do what makes YOU happy and not others. You won't be sad, trust me. But... Make sure you can afford a lease through Exxon mobil for gas, and huge insurance rates. Lastly, this car is no toy, it absolutely will get away from you. I've owned ungodly modified cars and I'm an above average driver and the car found my limits real fast, not the other way around.
Honestly I drove a 135 and I sure loved it, but it's no M3.
My advice dont buy a new M3 e92 get a used one or lease an 135 m sport package, wait until the new m3 comes out, the V8 m3 cant hold its own with the big boys. advice buy a used 1m.
Test drive both and see which one you like more. If you are mature/responsible I do not think an M3 is not "too much car for a 20 y/o" depending again on what kind of person you are. It will take awhile to get used to the power if you haven't had anything comparable before.
People will be jealous but that comes with the territory. If you care about that then why even look at the M3? You can't care what others think...
I've been driving 300/400 hp+ cars for the last 7 years (since I was 17)..
From a financial standpoint just make sure you KNOW you can afford the one you go with. I'm not a huge fan of leasing/loans but that's me.
My answer, none of the above.. If you have that kind of money and plan on buying for keeps. Go hunting for an 1M. Right inbetween 135i and M3 in power figures, but as muich or more fun than the M3. In August of last year, I was in the same boat you are currently in. I'm 20 years old and I saved up enough money to get a loan for my 335i. I love my car, people I went to high school with know when they see it, that it's me and sometimes they talk about it, but I don't care.. why? 'CAUSE I DRIVE A MUTHA f****ING BMW and they don't!
He didn't ask whether the car is too much for him. The 18 year olds here who daily drive Ferraris/Lamborghinis/911s would beg to differ. They'd say it isn't ENOUGH car. Go with what makes financial sense to you.
If money is no object, get what you want. Do not buy it with the intent of impressing others. You won't impress anyone who is important. Personally I agree with an earlier poster; get what you can easily afford without outside help and build an appreciation for what you have. It doesn't matter what you chose as long as you are happy with it. Bragging rights for having done it on your own are better than bragging about what dad bought you.
Having said this, if an M3 is still within your means, go for it. It makes a lot more sense than buying a cheaper car and "rice-ing" it up. It still is not a wise investment, and something more practical like a 135 M sport will be just as much fun, but will be a lot less expensive to keep on the road. FYI: I own an M3, but still miss my E30 325es, and use a 335xi as a daily driver.
