Anyone able to confirm whether the front headlamps here in NA are going to be different than the ones heading to EU? I saw a thread on the Xoutpost forums that we get different angel eyes than the cars shipped to EU. What are the differences? Wish the new X5 had the same LED turn signals and headlamps that the new 5GT got.
We just got our week 40 build...a X35 Premium...with halogens, not LED eyes. It was an amazing process though. Built last Monday, assembled last Tuesday, on the truck that night, delivered Friday morning. I toured the factory in Munich, and loved it, but the process is still quite impressive.
Picked up the 2011 brochure from the dealer this week. It states "new LED daytime running lamps" in two places. I pick up my new X5 this morning, maybe it has them??
Perhaps I am misunderstanding all the threads I have seen on the above subject but I just received my week 42 BMW X5 50i and it DOES indeed have white LED Daytime running lights! Now the LED's are built in and discharge into the corona ring lights and when the lights are in daytime position (first click of the light knob from the right) instead of on automatic, they glow a brilliant white color and they look great! I will try to post some photos when I can.
When I was at the dealership picking the vehicle up, I was parked between a 335is and a 5GT and the corona rights were exactly the same brilliant white color as both of these vehicles. I asked the SA to turn the lights on in both cars and sure enough they were identical!!
But when I turned the lights to the automatic position (far left position of the light knob) they reverted to the yellow/off white color corona rings when the xenon headlights were on and ambient light was low.
From speaking to the BMW dealer and their source at BMW NA, this is the 8TL feature that was active on from week 40 (and possibly some week 39) production X5's. They removed the 8TL from the build sheet as they sometimes do because it is a standard/basic feature that cannot be changed or optioned out or deleted and is therefore not showing up on the list.
I think alot of this has been hyped up by people thinking that the LED lights were going to be a ring of lots of individual LEDs when the same distinctive corona rings in white is much more impressive in my view. Hope this helps and look forward to comments and feedback
If you have a week 40 or newer build give it a try. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Has anyone confirmed this? I asked the dealer here in MN and they have no idea about 8TL. They told me they would check but no news yet. I am holding my order since I want to make sure I get the LED lights.
Wait - so you're claiming they have nice LED white corona rings that somehow turn yellow when the normal headlights turn on?
Every other BMW that has gone with the LED coronas has them stay the same color with the headlights on - they are LEDs, they don't change color. Something doesn't sound right, pics needed.
Yeah, I think he's mistaken them for true LED's. My OE H8's "look" like LED's when they are on as DRL's...but when you pull up to a new Audi...there's no comparison...they are not LED. The H8's just brighten when in DRL mode.
Very confusing!!!!! Not even the dealers know what we are talking about here. All I hear is that the 8TL option should be available on X5 built after week 40 but nobody saw any difference on the cars. I have a leasing ending on Feb/2011 and really wanted to get LED on my next X5. However, with the holiday incentive I may have tu make a decision before the end of this year. Please post pictures.
There are no LEDs on my week 41 build. The possibility of the claim being true is very unlikely for US vehicles. The person that mentioned the possibility has not posted again, which is not a good sign.
I'm a bit surprised how fervent people are about LED corona rings. Yes, they are neat but I'm not going to base my purchase on some head light candy (I'm waiting for my Oct build). To each his own I guess.
Agree that having LED lights is not a deal braking but I would be very mad if the X5 gets them couple weeks after I order mine. I am amazed that BMW dealers cannot answer anything regarding the 8TL (daytime running lights) that is showing in the order but they don't know what that is.
So....The new X3 is supposed to have the same "LED Corona headlight-rings"....My Father In law ordered one and it is scheduled to be built in week 1. I'm assuming it is probably a very similar, if not the same, part. I wonder if they will string the new x3 owners along the same way they have us; or maybe it will become available then? My X5 50 is scheduled for week 52....that would tick me off (not enough to do anything about it though )
When I took delivery at the factory( PCD) in the first week of November- they were doing the new X3 dealer intro/training and every new X3 there had the new bright white LED coronas- rings what ever you want to call them. My X5 build was completed in week 42 and 8TL was originally on my build list in August, but removed from my build sheet when I picked up the vehicle. And my 35d did not have the new led's.
So either they had limited availability/supply of the trim rings for this year and chose to put those into the new X3 to give it more appeal. :dunno: And maybe they are waiting on the X5 because have no significant upgrades for the 012 X5 other than to add the LEDs?
Haven't heard anything, but my dealer told me today my car moved from week 52 to week 46 so that would kinda tick me off a bit.......if it's true of course. Nothing I can do about it now since it's already in production though....
I was a big fan of the LED rings - but tonight I saw a 5-series at night for the first time. Not impressed! They look great during the day, but at night they are definitely weak and parts disappear at slight angles. Was kind of shocked, I expected to be jealous.
Anyway, now I don't feel so bad. I'm really surprised BMW didn't do a better job of making them look snappy at night, maybe they will in the next gen.
According to the dealer in MN it is now "official" that the new LED lights will only be available on the April 2011 production of the X5. I ordered my new X5 yesterday since I gave up waiting for this feature.
8TL means front and rear DRLs are active, without 8TL only front DRLs are active.
