Hi all!-i have been told castrol magnetec 10w 40 is bad for my car(e46 2000),yet bmw indy said its within bmw spectrum, had it in my car over a year now-put in when i bought it-due insp2-will my engine be ok?thanx in advance:dunno:
From memory, that was a semi-synthetic blend. It should be ok, but next time use, Castrol Edge 0W-40, or Mobil 1 0W-40, whichever is cheaper, since you guys really get ripped off! Edge 0W-30 is also ok, especially during the winter season.
Sure, that is a BMW LL-04 spec oil, and you can use it all year round. The Edge 0W-30 is a LL-01 spec oil too, and I mentioned it more as a price alternative, though I doubt there is much if any, price difference from the 0W-40.
UK Castrol GTX 10-40 is fine. My mechanic swears by it and I've always used it.
It might not be the highest performing "super oil" but my mileage is pretty low. My annual service and oil change is effectievely about every 6K for me.
It will work, but isn't a recommended oil for the E46. Castrol rates it only for -20C to +20C use in an E46, so you shouldn't use it year round. GTX also is not a long life oil or full synthetic, so shouldn't be used for the normal service intervals. Castrol Edge 0w30 is the Castrol recommended oil for the E46 in the UK.

I use "CASTROL Formula RS 10w-60". It was recommended to me by BMW servicehouse in Germany for everyday road use. For track use it would be better "CASTROL Formula RS 0w-40", I believe.
No engine flush needed. Mixing different types of multigrade engine oil should not cause any problems (synthetic or not), especially from the same manufacturer. You will only be left with about 0.5 litres of the old oil mixed in with about 6.5 litres of the new oil - I'm assuming that you will change the oil filter?
I'm not going to argue with any of that but my car runs more sweetly with 10-40 than it does on 0-30. And ambient temperatures of above 20C don't affect us for very much of year [worst luck ;^) ]
It's a bit like that sensation when your oil level is getting boderderline low [which used to happen with my old car]Nothing you can put your finger on but the engine just doesn't sound as happy. It's just that much sweeter when you top it up a bit.
Same thing with this car and the different oil grades. [Mileage is knocking on 70K, so maybe it's staring to benefit from the more viscous oil to some degree ?]
Love your 10-40 oil...then report back 5 years from now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
