7 Series - E65 / E66 (2002 - 2008)
Discussion of BMW's 4th generation E65/E66 7 Series flagship. The E65 generated much controversy, due to its radical styling and iDrive user difficulties. Nonetheless, the E65 broke records to become the best-selling 7-series iteration ever, especially after its 2005 facelift.

e65 Idrive controller removal

HI Folks,

I just purchased a used 2002 745i and now have the joy of getting everything right.

I found that a new battery fixed almost everything and kept all the trouble codes from coming back.

I am having an issue trying to find a thread that tells me how to remove the I drive controller or the console. Has anyone done this before? I have replacement for the controller but no idea how it comes out.

I will attach a photo of the console for your review.

Thumbs up idrive replacement

What an excellent thread. It even has a button to translate the instructions.

Thank you KaileSvick for the excellent help.

Hey Pryor - did you manage to get the console out, and replace the iDrive? My 04 new-to-me has a possessed iDrive knob, and I need to do this. I also need a source for the controller - where'd you find yours, and are you happy with it?

Hi guys

Just got my 745i a week ago. The day after I bought it, the idrive knob stopped working! No problem on the two previous test drives, of course... Anyway, as the knob seems kinda wobbly, I figured I just had to replace it and things would be fine, but searching this forum kinda scared me.

1. I have a replacement knob right here on my desk. When turning it, there are no clicks, it just runs freely. Is it because it isn't plugged in, or will the clicks be there no matter what?

2. When the car has been parked for a while, sometimes the knob works for a while. Does this mean I have to go through the horrifying task of checking all the modules for that red light, or could it simply be my wobbly knob, that is causing the problem? The replacement knob feels so much more sturdy, although it also lacks the afforementioned clicks.

datpoet : if you need text...just use google translate but I think images are very good prepared

sbcdk : if the car is not "online" idrive knob runs freely...it's correct...after you put key inside and push start (even without brake) idrive will start clicking
