Thanks for the suggestion. I have Googled extensively, and everything seems to say only post Sept 2002 stereos are compatible.
My question clearly is; does anybody know it its possible with a pre Sept. 2002 stereo.

It's definitely possible; the question is how you want to do it. The most "factory" way of doing it is to upgrade to a post-09/02 stereo (BM53; check RealOEM.com for part numbers) and get the BMW aux retrofit kit.

For a possibly simpler solution, check out the products available from http://Quidzel.com

Obviously you didn't search hard enough. The answer to your question comes up 20x when I type a simple 2001 E39 aux input I. My Google search.

There are numerous ways it can be done.

Brandon, please try to offer helpful reasonable answers. Sometimes simply posting a link to a company like Quidzel, which offers aux retrofits for pre-02 cars, can help get someone pointed in the right direction.

"Google it" is a lazy answer. Please try to add value and clarify, as BlueBee would want.

Thanks again Brandon. You've saved the day.
I enjoyed taking a brief look at your recent posts - there's somewhat of a trend in the tone of your replies.
It's a good thing you're here to show us lesser people the error of our ways. Keep up the good work.

Thanks guys. The Quidzel option and the ebay option look viable. I'll need to sit down and work out which has what, and pull the stereo out and verify exactly which model it is, round or flat pin, etc.
But thanks again. I'm sure either of these options will be a solution.
